PRIMARY OBJECTIVE
To plan and manage the Bakery Department so as to promote sales and achieve profit margins and labor goals. To produce bakery product. To contribute toward ensuring a positive shopping environment for customers and a positive working environment for associates.
NATURE AND SCOPE
Emphasis in this position is on ongoing department planning, execution and evaluation in order to ensure maximum sales and profit opportunities, effective cost control, efficient utilization of labor and strong customer service levels. Primary challenge is consistently meeting or exceeding department sales, profit and labor goals, and ensuring consistent quality of bakery product is displayed. Baking proficiency with all products. This position is responsible for providing effective training, development and work direction for department associates, and it requires ability to encourage individual and group effort toward department objectives. This position requires ongoing judgment/decision making, social skills/verbal interaction, reading, writing, math, Bakery equipment operation, walking, standing, and exposure to heat. Position functions and work hours may vary according to business needs. Assignments and work direction are provided by the Store Director, Bakery Merchandiser or person in charge.
ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS
1. Develops effective daily/weekly work plan based on weekly sales projections, budgeted labor goals and previous operating results
- Analyzes sales and labor projections
- Ensures proper stales control through analysis of units per thousand sold and allocated shelf space by category and/or item
- Determines work priorities and establishes work lists in order to consistently maintain adequate department conditions
- Determines work needs and writes labor schedule in most effective manner to meet these needs
- Communicates with Store Director and Bakery Merchandiser concerning ongoing department status, including successes, problems and planning

2. Implements and maintains coordinated, aggressive and creative merchandising using Division guidelines, to maximize sales, variety and gross profit
- Consistently monitors mix of demand and profit items, shelf allocation, variety, movement and stock levels to properly order, merchandise and meet sales and gross profit goals
- Collaborates with vendors on approved space allocation, display and deal buying and follows through on product quality and credits, as appropriate
- Ensures proper product quality, presentation and rotation
- Assists with production, stocking and display building
3. Supervises Bakery associates to ensure efficient labor utilization and effectiveness in meeting department objectives
- Effectively communicates tasks and priorities
- Follows up to ensure proper task completion and adheres to store and
department policies and procedures
- Monitors sales per man-hour and payroll, and adjusts labor to production and work needs
- Ensures customers receive prompt and friendly service and assistance from all department associates
- Ensures proper product handling to control shrinkage and waste
4. Manages Bakery Department receiving, invoicing, pricing, shrink control and inventory to ensure proper product control, and that gross profit goals are met - Supervises and assists to ensure accuracy and organization of receiving function - Processes invoices accurately and timely, checks credits and transfer slips for accuracy, and verifies purchase journal against receiving records
- Takes accurate inventory
- Collaborates with Pricing Department to ensure department pricing and signing is accurately maintained for all items and systems, and monitors price sensitive items in market
5. Supervises department safety and sanitation programs
- Ensures all associates are properly trained in equipment use, maintenance and sanitation standards, proper lifting and all related safety rules and procedures
- Ensures no one under 18 years of age operates hazardous equipment
- Conducts department inspections and maintains safety checklist - Ensures department compliance with sanitation-related issues relative to outside sanitation auditors and public health inspections
- Ensures personal protective devices (chemical resistant gloves, splash goggles) are used
6. Performs Bakery Department personnel functions - Sits in on interviews for „skilled‟ help

- Ensures all new associates are properly trained to ensure competence in positions and for possible future development
- Conducts and ensures all probationary and regular performance reviews are completed
- Provides individual and group guidance and encouragement toward department objectives
- Recommends and administers corrective actions as appropriate
- Communicates and works with Human Resources, Bakery Operations,
Manager, and Store Director as appropriate to above functions

-High school education (or concurrent enrollment in an educational institution) preferred but not required
