What are the responsibilities and job description for the Vehicle Technology Specialist position at METRO?
Basic Function
Under the direct supervision of the Manager, Technical Services, this position is responsible for evaluating technologies, which improve vehicle performance, comply with emission regulations performance, reduce expenditures, and ensures METRO’s position of keeping current with available vehicle technologies. Investigates and resolves systemic issues with fleet vehicles. Oversees and instructs mechanics and technicians in testing programs in accordance with Maintenance operating procedures. Responsible for vehicle fluid analysis programs and reporting. Performs duties in a safe, efficient manner and in compliance with all applicable rules and safety procedures.
Responsibilities and Specific Duties
- Responsible for the evaluation of new technologies, and the testing and evaluation of systems, components, and lubricants/additives for METRO Bus Maintenance.
- Participates with federal and state regulatory agencies in the development of alternative fuel, ADA, vehicle emissions and related legislation.
- Develops and responds to required reports from federal and state regulatory agencies regarding alternative fuel and other issues, as necessary.
- Responsible for scheduling and managing projects from inception to completion.
- Assists in the development and budget monitoring of all vehicle technology projects for the Maintenance Support Division.
- Develops and makes presentations concerning various maintenance issues, both internally and externally for METRO.
- Researches and performs root cause analysis to resolve systemic issues among fleet model types.
- Identifies bus maintenance skill deficiencies and arranges for pertinent training and technical assistance.
- Assists with the development of testing programs and special projects.
- Coordinates the resolution of issues with the Manager, Maintenance Support Services, Manager, Quality Assurance, Quality Assurance Inspectors, Maintenance Training staff, Technical Engineering Specialist and Bus Maintenance BOF’s.
- Initiates and coordinates purchases with Procurement/Contracts and Central Stores. Investigates opportunities for cost savings. Develops and implements plans to achieve cost savings.
- Maintains all records relative to special projects and provides documentation and briefings as required.
- Interfaces and coordinates with vendors, contractors, users, and internal personnel as related to special projects.
- Gathers and collates current and incoming information from maintenance related in-house programs.
- Provides excellent customer service to METRO internal and external customers.
- Promotes safety awareness and follows safety procedures in efforts to reduce or eliminate accidents.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Education Requirement
High school diploma or GED is required. Additional vocational training in heavy diesel mechanics is preferred.
Years & Experience Required
Minimum seven (7) years progressive diagnostic/repair heavy duty vehicle maintenance experience to include extensive powertrain, breaking, charging and HVAC systems maintenance and include a minimum of five (5) years of mechanical technician level experience.
Knowledge & Skills Required
Extensive knowledge of heavy-duty vehicle design and operating systems. Detailed knowledge of quality control/heavy duty vehicle maintenance technologies, procedures, and diagnostic systems. Good communications (written/verbal) and interpersonal skills. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word and PowerPoint). Knowledge of SAP software preferred.
