What are the responsibilities and job description for the Distillation Process Engineering Manager position at MGP Ingredients?
MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES
Safety
- Lead, direct, coach, counsel, demonstrate, teach, walk, talk…the personal and operational safety accountability first culture.
- Participate as a sponsor to the one of the SAT (Safety Action Team) sub-committees.
- Ensure all MGPI Processing Employees have access to the necessary PPE, Systems/Equipment and Tools to safely perform the tasks of their role.
Management of Distillery process technology, processes, production planning
- Review, evaluate, daily S&OP and customer service demand models to ensure the distillery production is producing to the annual/monthly plan and forecast quantities. Issue daily directives & production plans to ensure the highest quality spirit, corn oil, and DDGS is meeting and/or exceeding plan/forecast. The Distillery Operations Manager will execute the directive and production plans.
- Monitoring and analyze lab data, operational/system data and operations reports; then, daily, weekly, monthly….direct actions for performance improvements, operational efficiencies, energy reduction as well as KPI improvements.
- Review, evaluation, management of plant processes and provide technical advisement/training/coaching and influential leadership to Operations Manager, Production Shift Manager and Operators.
- Identify, prioritize, plan and execute reactive and preventative maintenance plans for periodic turnarounds and daily maintenance ensuring the systems are operating safely, reliably and at maximum capacity & efficiency.
Continuous Improvement
- Analyze lab data, operating data, and quality reports to determine recommended changes to improve quality, distillery performance and lowering raw material/material/energy inputs
- Effectively apply and measure Zero Based Analysis (ZBA), Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), other continuous improvement tools, and industry best practices to optimize the distillery processes, maximize performance and savings.
- Perform the continuous improvement report outs to operations team and executives
Development/training/mentoring distillery management and operators
- Mentor, teach and train operations management, operators and engineers to develop increased knowledge and experience on distillery process fundamentals and technical operation.
- Attend industry & commercial conferences, trade shows and network with vendors to keep sharp distillery best practices and available technologies.
Capital project development
- Provide project engineering advisement/review on distillery process engineering when necessary. Develop, project manage and execute Distillery CAR’s for process changes and improvements.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering required
- Chemical Engineering discipline preferred.
- 5 years ethanol plant experience with deep knowledge of milling, cooking, fermentation, distillation and dryhouse operation process technologies
- 3 years management and leadership experience
- 2 years of project management experience
- Beverage alcohol production experience is preferred
- Master Distiller certification or training to earn Master Distiller certification
- Analytical chemistry data evaluation/analysis and organoleptic/sensory analysis are a benefit
SKILLS
- Technical & mechanical inclined skills and attention to detail are a must
- Excellent communication skills…verbal, written, presentation, interpersonal
- Leadership of people and management of processes
- Excellent troubleshooting ability
- Overall familiarity of computers and office type of software (MS Office, SAP ERP…) and typical engineering programs (AutoCad, infinity, mintitab, MS Visio…)
- Smart phone and respective business communication apps…messaging, texting, phone calls, emailing.
