JOB TITLE: Technical Writer
JOB TYPE: Hourly, Non-exempt
JOB SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for writing and editing reports, manuals, briefs, proposals, instructions and related technical and administrative documentation. This writer must be able to communicate and collaborate with subject matter experts across departments verifying and publishing these documents.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Utilize excellent written and oral communication skills while working in a team environment
- Explain scientific and technical ideas in simple language.
- Understand drawings, specifications, mockups, and product samples for developing training documents
- Gather information from subject matter experts (i.e., shadow shop personnel) as well as internet sources to gain firm understanding necessary to document a variety of material, including work instructions, quality plans, procedures, specifications, standards and manuals.
- Prepare charts, graphs, or visual aids supporting the text.
- Ensure documents flow in a logical and easy to follow sequence.
- Write clear and concise policies and procedures.
- Organize and publish documents needing structure; for example table of contents, citations, and appendices..
- Adjust copy as necessary and proofread for grammar and spelling.
- Submit copies to managers and/or stakeholders for feedback.
- Track comments and release the document following final approval
- Provide updates and different revisions as necessary.
- Edit and update legacy documentation.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum of Associates of Arts in English, History or Communication or equivalent
- Strong technical aptitude
- 5 years’ experience in technical editing
- Solid intradisciplinary communication skills
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat Pro, Publisher and Painter required
- Proficiency in Flare, MadCap, and FrameMaker desired
- Ability to shift focus quickly and respond to changing needs of the business
