The Web Applications Development Manager will work within our digital strategy and services team to maintain all technical aspects of our operations. They will manage our technical team, including developers, programmers, and student assistants. This mid-level position blends technical and leadership abilities to make recommendations on, improve, and maintain applications, scripts, code bases, and other technical systems that impact our digital advertising, websites, communications, and other digital marketing. The Web Applications Development Manager will work with central IT and external vendors to integrate technologies with UMC's systems.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Be technical lead for all applications, programs, and systems within the digital strategy and services team.
2. Create custom modules for Omni CMS, WordPress, Localist calendar system, and Concept3D campus map system.
3. Create, promote, and maintain web-based applications, pages, and analytics tracking (using Google Tag Manager, Google Analytics 4, and Slate CRM). Provide technical leadership in support of Michigan Tech’s integrated marketing/branding campaigns. Balance requested features with page and interface accessibility, usability, and performance.
4. Manage technical integration between Michigan Tech's Safety First Alert system (Rave) and web properties.
5. Manage day-to-day priorities of the technical team, provide timely assistance and feedback, and establish a yearly review system to nurture and develop new team skills.
6. Assess the technical parameters of a project, give feedback on viability and timing estimates, and assign and/or execute tasks and projects using project management software (Monday.com).
7. Modify pre-existing code, create custom code, and work with API’s and open source while documenting work to industry standards. Prototype, test, and debug projects and pages.
8. Attend standing meetings to continue an ongoing relationship with central IT and external technology vendors.
9. Work with the web team in reviewing Michigan Tech web pages—and provide consultation to the University community—for consistency, accuracy, accessibility, standards, performance, and compliance.
10. Collaborate with the digital strategy and services team via Slack and Monday.com.
11. Support an environment of team trust.
12. Integrate safety practices into daily activities.
13. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work.
14. Supervisory Responsibilities: Direct management of technical team members. Functional supervision may be exercised over student web programmers and others involved in the development and maintenance of the Michigan Tech website.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, management information systems, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

  • Five years of professional experience in web/web application programming
  • One year of professional experience managing others
  • Expertise in one of PHP, Java, Python, Perl, or Ruby
  • Expertise in HTML, Javascript, and CSS
  • Experience in using and interpreting web standards (browsers, accessibility, and validity)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of CMS theory

Desirable Education and/or Experience

  • Experience working in an academic environment
  • Experience with Omni CMS
  • Familiarity with SQL (MySQL, Oracle, etc)
  • Familiarity with frameworks and libraries
  • Familiarity with CDN caching services (Cloudflare)
  • Familiarity with page speed performance testing tools (Lighthouse, Page Speed Insights, GTMetrix)
  • Familiarity with web analytics tracking (Google Tag Manager, Google Analytics 4, and Slate CRM)
  • Demonstrated understanding of User Interface principles and User Experience

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

  • Excellent interpersonal and oral/written communication skills
  • Strong interest in the Internet and desire to learn new technologies
  • Highly self-motivated, capable of prioritizing multiple tasks in a proactive manner, meeting deadlines, and displaying attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to work well in a fast-paced environment, work independently, and thrive on challenges
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate and test system upgrades with internal IT groups and third-party vendors
  • Demonstrated ability and skill to analyze and correct coding, apply creativity and imagination to problem-solving and instruct users in technical application
  • Demonstrated ability to understand customer needs, provide quality service, persuasively present ideas, and commit to customer satisfaction
  • Understanding and willingness to learn new web concepts and technologies

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

  • Experience with XSLT
  • Experience with WordPress and WPCLI
  • Experience with Liquid Markup
  • Experience with TWIG templating language
  • Experience with Adobe Photoshop
  • Experience in lean and/or 5S practices

Required Training and Other Conditions of Employment
