What are the responsibilities and job description for the Cost Accountant position at MICO?

SUMMARY:
Works within the accounting department under the direction of an Accounting Manager performing primarily cost estimates, standard cost reporting, and other reports as assigned.  May be asked to aid with other accounting functions at MICO.  Position requires interaction with all departments and outside contract services.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Will include, but not limited to the following areas:
  • Review costing process to insure accuracy of item cost data.
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly financial reporting and variance analysis, and communication to management.
  • Coordinate annual standard cost roll process.
  • Prepare cost estimates on new products on which Pricing may base product pricing.  This is done by analyzing cost estimate requests, annual requirements, blueprints, bills of material, labor time reports, shop and vendor quotations, and other documentation necessary.
  • Interact directly with people in all areas of the production process.
  • Analyze information for cost estimate reports, scrap reports, cost summaries, sales journals, and other reports as required or requested.
  • Assist on annual budget preparations.
  • Complete other costing related activities upon request.
  • Assist in implementing any new accounting procedures as directed.
  • Other duties as requested.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area.
  • Look for and recommend product and process improvements in support of corporate goals, objectives and activities.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
  • Required minimum, two-year Associate degree (A.A.S.).  Preferred, Bachelor's degree (B. S.) from an accredited four-year college or university; and one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Demonstrated competency working with various software packages including, but not limited to, Microsoft Word and Excel and other software systems unique to MICO such as OnBase and Fourth Shift.  SAP experience preferred.
 
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, or governmental regulations.  
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
 
REASONING ABILITY:
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. 
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
 
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
  • Proficient with IBM compatible PC and 10-key adding machine.
  • Familiar with macros and complex spreadsheet formulas, definitions, and applications.

TRAINING/SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:
Employee must complete general safety training such as Right to Know annually as well as specific training such as Lockout/Tagout, Respirator, Degreaser, Hazardous Waste Management and any others that may be deemed pertinent to job duties.  All policies must be understood and followed.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear.
  • Employee must be able to visit and work with other employees in other areas of the building including the shop floor and engineering department.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds; and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The employee is required to request assistance when lifting anything exceeding 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, and is occasionally exposed to fumes, airborne particles, or risk of electrical shock.
