What are the responsibilities and job description for the Safety Specialist position at Microbac?
Under the direction of the Sr. Vice President- Corporate Quality, the Safety Specialist will provide a central point of contact and be responsible for the administration, implementation and oversight of companywide safety initiatives designed to ensure the safety and security of employees and protect against the financial impact of loss due to: employee injury, liability claims, building and equipment damage, damage to the environment or theft.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- The Safety Specialist will administer and maintain a companywide safety program that mitigates risk and ensures the Company operates in as safe a manner as possible for all stakeholders (employees, clients and community)
- Prepare, analyze, interpret and communicate loss related statistics, exposure information and regulatory requirements in a manner that will enhance senior management’s understanding and gain their support
- Establish relevant objectives based on analyzed data and create and implement action plans, policies and SOP’s
- Partner with leadership to design and implement companywide risk improvement strategies
- Ensure compliance with required new hire and ongoing employee safety training requirements
- Prepare training programs to increase health and safety awareness
- Ensure all locations maintain a consistent and appropriate level of emergency response preparedness
- Audit locations safety compliance and work with leadership on corrective actions
- Measure and record near misses, accidents and injuries with effective investigations, root cause analyses and corrective actions
- Ensure appropriate security measures are in place to protect employees and physical property
- Maintain Company’s Chemical Hygiene Program and work with each location to develop local addendums consistent with their state regulations
- Ensure all locations comply with national/local environmental regulations as it pertains to hazardous waste disposal
- Work with cross functional management and insurance carrier on claims investigations, policy renewals, reporting requirements etc..
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Possess a basic knowledge of risk control and safety standards (i.e.; OSHA, DOT, etc.)
- Possess technical knowledge of safety management practices
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Must possess strong analytical, organizational and planning abilities
- Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management, Occupational Safety, Environmental Engineering or a related discipline is preferred
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in safety role or a combination of laboratory operations roles with safety exposure
- Prior experience with multi-site program administration is preferred
- Prior experience working in a laboratory environment is required
- Must be able to travel regularly up to 70% time

- Frequent travel is required for this position both air and vehicle travel up to 75%
Working Conditions:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to seasonal weather elements as present in the region they work and may work near moving mechanical parts and be exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
