Job Summary:
The Service & Installation Technician is responsible for the maintenance and installation of lumber grading systems for our clients across the United States, Canada and Australia / New Zealand. This role requires a strong electrical, computer network and mechanical background with the ability to build trust in a customer facing position.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Perform mechanical, electrical, and network installation of systems.
- Build and commission Microtec products.
- Provide customer support by answering questions and troubleshooting issues, both onsite at customer locations and remotely via phone or email.
- Participate in new installations at customer locations, working closely with a team of cross-functional colleagues, led by a project manager.
- Troubleshoot and repair mechanical components, electrical components, computer hardware and computer software.
- Perform routine maintenance visits, both remotely and onsite at customer locations.
- Document all maintenance reporting and troubleshooting agendas for customers.
- Train customers on how to properly operate Microtec products.
- Collaborate with logistics teams to prepare and package outgoing scanners.
- Provide 24/7 phone support and be on-call on a rotating schedule via telephone and high-speed internet during weeknights and weekends.
- Assist the manufacturing department in the production of new builds.
- Setup computers in preparation of system testing and shipment.
- Calibrate and test new systems as needed.
- Maintain the work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition and follow prescribed safety regulations.
- Document customer interactions.
- Collaborate with other department members to ensure the best results.
- Book and travel itineraries and expense reports.
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Electrical, mechanical, computer software and basic networking skills are necessary to perform effectively in this role.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Written and verbal communication, to understand customer issues and explain technical information in clear terms.
- Time-management skills to handle appointments efficiently and stay on schedule.
- Problem-solving skills to diagnose issues with malfunctioning equipment and implement effective solutions.
- Attention to detail to spot issues and complete accurate reports about repairs.
- Ability to use, repair and maintain machines and tools.
Education and Experience:
- Two years of related electrical, computer networking experience or similar experience.
- Degree in mechanical or electrical engineering highly desired.
- Experience in sawmill or planer mill environment preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift to 50 pounds at times.
- Must be able to travel domestically and internationally up to 50% of the time, including weekends.
- Ability to differentiate wire and cable colors as well as various audible tones.
Work Schedule:
- Monday - Friday, 8am to 5pm when in office
- Rotating on-call shifts from 5pm to 8am for 7 days at a time, working from home.
- Maximum 12-hour days when working onsite.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $31.25 - $33.65 per hour
Expected hours: 40 – 45 per week
