Purpose of Position: Promote and improve student health and educational success by planning, implementing, coordinating and evaluating school health services that advance well being, academic success and achievement, prevent illness and injury and facilitate the removal of health-related barriers to learning to promote an optimal level of wellness for students. Classification Summary This is a classified position with the principle function to provide a comprehensive program that maximizes the quantity of in-class time by reducing the incidence of health related absenteeism, eliminating or minimizing health problems which impair learning and achieving the highest degree of independent functioning possible. The Health Technician collaborates with a wide variety of school system and professional disciplines, parents and community resources to enhance the educational process and promotes an optimal level of wellness for students. As such, the School Nurse serves in the roles of health program coordinator, case manager, direct care provider, collaborator, advocate and educator for one or more schools.

The work is performed independently under the general guidance of the Health Services Supervisor and with the collaboration of the School Principal. The principle duties of this class are performed in a general office and school environment with some travel required between schools or for other District responsibilities.Essential Duties and Responsibilities (will vary by assignment) Assess, plan, evaluate and manage health services for one or more schools; Provide direct and indirect health services to individual students for acute and chronic conditions to promote and protect the optimal health status of school-age children; Maintain, evaluate and interpret cumulative health data to accommodate individual needs of students and to ensure that the District meets State and Federal regulations; Provide health assessments including obtaining and updating health history, monitoring health outcomes, assessing health needs and educating students, school personnel and parents regarding student health management; Identify and monitor students with special health care needs; Develop and monitor individual health care plans for students who require nursing intervention during the school day, as well as for students who may require adaptation of the learning environment or classroom schedule; Provide case management to students with complex health needs; Manage chronic and ongoing health problems in cooperation with parents, physicians, school and community agencies; Provide health screening to include height, weight, vision, dental, scoliosis or other health assessments;Provide health education and anticipatory guidance; provide classroom instruction on health issues; Counsel students concerning specific problems such as pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases and substance abuse in order to facilitate responsible decision-making practices; Serve as a resource person to school staff members in health instruction; Coordinate school and community health activities and serve as a liaison health professional between home, school and community resources; Assists in the coordination and implementation of District wellness programs in assigned schools;Ensure that school health services and activities are appropriately documented; Document, compile and analyze data for required reports on school health services; Train and supervise staff who provide health services, including the administration of medication to students; Participate in the development of the schools emergency health and crises plan; Participate in professional development activities to improve personal knowledge and skills; Utilize technology resources to enhance the delivery of health services; Adhere to laws, policies, procedures and ethical standards of the school nursing profession; Perform all work duties and activities in accordance with District policies, procedures and safety practices, as well as professional nursing standardsOther Duties and Responsibilities: Attend District or other job-related meetings; Serve as mentor for student interns; Perform other related duties as requiredCompetency Requirements: Knowledge of: Essential nursing skills and procedures including physical and mental assessment and health care management; Principles and practices of professional nursing, especially as related to school health; State and local laws relating to health and social issues; Leadership, collaboration, planning and organization techniques and practicesAbility to: Provide effective nursing services at one or more schools; Communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Safely administer, supervise, delegate and document the administration of medication according to Boise School District policy; Work as an independent health services provider in a building with no other health care workers; Listen actively and ask questions to assess health care needs; Delegate to and supervise health technicians and/or other non-licensed individuals; Plan and manage care for those students with special health needs including 504s and Individual Health Plans;Collaborate and communicate effectively with community physicians and organizations as a school representative/liaison in order to assist students; Provide health information that promotes wellness through health education; Teach health education per the health curriculum manual and growth and development per the existing growth and development manual; Monitor student compliance with Idaho State Immunization Laws; Complete documentation of Medicaid; Serve as school designee to report child protection issues as directed by School Board Policy; Serve as a resource for staff and students; Work with multi-cultural and multi-ethnic, often non-English speaking, students and families; Exercise professional judgment in making nursing decisions; Organize and maintain health services records; Prepare clear and concise reports; Maintain confidentiality; Operate standard office equipment including a personal computer using program applications appropriate to assigned duties; Establish and maintain effective professional relationships with other District employees, supervisory personnel, students, parents and referral sources; Perform multiple tasks simultaneously, including handling interruptions, and return to and complete tasks in a timely manner; Acceptable Experience and Training: Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing preferred; Associate Diploma of Nursing considered if the candidate has two or more years experience in school nursing, mental health nursing, community health nursing or emergency nursing; and CPR Certification required, with CPR Instructor Certification preferred.
