The Milan Police Department is accepting applications for one (1) Part-Time Police Officer position. The position may be filled with a police recruit position. The Milan Police Department is a community oriented department with a mission of providing the residents of Milan with exemplary police services. Officers are expected to be dedicated, committed and maintain a high standard of police professionalism both on and off-duty. Retirements of full-time officers are expected during 2022 freeing full-time positions.
POSITION SUMMARY/JOB DESCRIPTION:
As a police Recruit, you will be paid to attend a police academy. You must have a High School Diploma or GED, & be 21 years of age at the time of graduation. A police recruit must meet all of the requirements of the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) for a police officer. Upon graduation a police recruit will automatically be reclassified to a police officer.
As a Police Officer you will perform responsible law enforcement and patrol work; regulate traffic, protect life and property and prevent crime and disorder; to provide assistance at the scene of accidents and other medical emergencies; work on rotating shifts; participating in investigating criminal law violations occurring within the Milan City limits, obtaining evidences and compiling information regarding these crimes, preparing cases for filing of charges, testifying in court, and related activities; Carries out duties in conformance with Federal, State, County, and City laws and ordinances.
This position requires substantial contact with general public, court officials, and other City officials in the performance of police operating activities.
Applicants must be able to work weekends, holidays, and occasionally on short notice.

Additionally, all applicants must meet the licensing standards for Michigan Law Enforcement Officers (Effective January 2, 2017 – (2016 PA 289))
U.S. Armed Forces Military Police veterans may qualify for the Military Police Basic Training Program (MPBTP) that offers qualifying military police veterans the option of attending an eight week (320 hour) basic police training academy, rather than the full course of study. Selected candidates will be invited to a supervisory interview before final recommendations are made to the chief of police. A chosen candidate is then given a notice of conditional employment pending the outcome of an extensive background investigation.
The position of part-time Police Officer is a sworn position, carrying all the duties, rights, and responsibilities of a regular full-time officer.
