Milwaukee Art Museum Job Description
Position Title: PreparatorJob: full-time hourly
Supervisor: Chief Preparator
General Purpose: Install, rotate and de install artwork and maintain pristine gallery spaces throughout the museum.
Education/Experience Requirements: Knowledge of handling artwork and using shop tools required.
License or Certification Requirements: none
Essential Job Functions:
- Perform duties as assigned to prepare, install and maintain permanent and temporary art exhibits.
- Art Handling: Physically move art from storage to exhibition space and vice-versa.
- Care for and create storage for collection art objects
- Exhibition Installation: Maintain and manage moveable wall system. Assist in the arrangement of moveable walls and partitions for exhibitions. Spackle, touch-up and paint walls, display cases and props. Hang paintings, install sculptures. Install labels, vinyl, banners and signs.
- Shipping and Receiving: Receive and unpack works of art and general supplies. Pack and ship works of art and other materials as assigned. Pick up and deliver works of art, equipment and supplies as directed.
- Construction: Operate hand and power tools such as a drill, band saw, table saw, sander, jointer, etc. to construct shipping crates, pedestals, props and display cases.
- Museum Maintenance: Dust and/or wipe vitrines, pedestals and platforms throughout building to maintain a clean environment for the art and a better viewing experience. Touch-up paint where needed. Respond to gallery maintenance requests.
Physical Requirements: Ability to carefully handle delicate and fragile objects a must, as well as lift, move, and place heavy objects with care and grace. Ability to lift 50 pounds. Ability to climb ladders and/or squeeze into small spaces helpful.
Temperament:
Excellent interpersonal skills, systematic, meticulous, patient, self-starter and works well under pressure. Manages time efficiently, analyze and solve problems independently and if necessary, collaboratively. Ability to be flexible and embrace changes within this position due to departmental priorities. Ability to work with a wide variety of people to achieve the goals of the Museum.
