What are the responsibilities and job description for the Visiting Instructor position at Mitchell College?
Mitchell College seeks to hire a Visiting Instructor (full-time or part-time) within the Division of Science who will share our passion for undergraduate teaching in Marine and Environmental Sciences while becoming fully immersed in our student community. The primary responsibility of this position is teaching, but our full-time faculty also participate in interdisciplinary collaboration, service, and student mentoring.
Responsibilities and Duties for a full-time appointment:
- Teach twelve semester hours (three to four courses) per semester. (Consisting of two 15-week instructional semesters).
- Perform all duties related to course management, delivery, and student support (i.e. text and other material selection, syllabi development, grading, classroom instruction, and assessment).
- Participate in college meetings, committees, etc. that pertain to information, policies, and recommendations that affect the academic tenor and quality, direction, and mission of the college.
- Mentor students on course selection in fall and spring.
- Promote and support co- and extra-curricular activities.
- Through personal example and classroom presence, further the mission of the college.
- Participate in student recruitment and retention efforts.
- A part-time (per course) appointment will also be considered.
Required Education and Experience:
- Relevant master’s or PhD degree in Biology or Marine Science
- At least 2 years of full-time or the equivalent teaching (in biology or a related scientific field) at a regionally accredited university/college.
- Documented service on departmental and/or college committees and/or active service to local, state or federal agencies which directly relate to the academic goals of the program.
Preferred Experience:
- Successful student recruitment and retention work, along with experience working with diverse, neurodivergent, and first-generation student populations.
- Record of scholarship within the discipline
- Ability to identify, develop, and maintain meaningful relationships with key stakeholders within the college community and greater region.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills
