MobilizeGreen seeks a conservation minded GIS Resource Assistant (RA) internships with the Eastern Regional Office of the USDA Forest Service in Milwaukee, WI. The internships start on June 11, 2023 for 32 weeks. The GIS Analyst RA will work on spatial data management with the Information Management (IM) team at the regional office in Milwaukee, WI. The RA will participate in all the program managers within IM; GIS, Inventorying and Monitoring, Natural Resource Management and the Geospatial services program, specifically assisting regional programs and forest staff with GIS analysis, spatial data workflows and map making
Generally, all work will be at the regional office in Milwaukee, WI. However, the RA may be asked to travel to one of the Forests within the region to assist an IM colleague with data management workflows and forest staff.
The Resource Assistants Program is designed for recent graduates and new professionals to launch their natural and cultural resources careers. The RA will receive hands-on learning experience, mentorship, and coaching to complete mission-critical work while developing leadership, critical thinking, and strategic communication skills. This is a developmental program.

Location: Located in southeast Wisconsin, the Eastern Region office situated in the iconic Gas Light Building in Milwaukee, WI. The Eastern Region is one of nine Forest Service administrative regions, consisting of 17 national forests and one national tallgrass prairie. It is also home to the Forest Service’s largest State and Private Forestry program, collaborating with Tribes, States, communities, Federal agencies, private landowners, and other partners to protect, conserve, and manage forests and community trees across 20 States and the District of Columbia.
Term: 32 weeks, starting June 11, 2022; Full Time/40 hours per week

Position Duties:
- Assess and analyze current spatial and tabular data for programs.
- Perform spatial analysis on various natural resource program and project data to assist regional and unit GIS needs for land management activities.
- Potential work includes: grant management, researching and coordinating with partners on upcoming events and compiling information for monthly meetings; engaging with USFS forest staff to create an informational, virtual “brown bag lunch” webinar series when needed.
- Reviewing website content and developing a system for sharing spatial guidance information.
- Work across the 5 programs (including State, Private and Tribal) within the regional Information Management program.
- Assisting with communications and workflows, connecting partners to share new tools and analytics to interpret and process spatial data.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or greater in Forest Resources/Forestry, Geography/GIS, or Natural Resource Management, within 0-5 years out of school.
- Basic knowledge of natural resources, ecosystems and land management.
- Basic knowledge of natural resource spatial data (preferred, can be trained on the job).
- Basic knowledge of ESRI products and GIS analysis.
- Strong writing and communication skills.
- Enthusiasm and a positive attitude.
