The Role:
Moderna is seeking a Manager of High Throughput Operations (HTOPs), to lead a cohesive team responsible for the high throughput pre-clinical production of high-quality DNA, RNA, and LNP for supply of Moderna’s research pipeline. This position is located at our Technical Development Operations site in Norwood, MA. This position will be staggered shift Monday – Friday, 11:00 am to 7:00 pm .
The individual in this role will be a hands-on front-line leader, accountable for leading a team in support of an automated, fast-paced operation to deliver DNA, RNA, and LNP for our Research and Process Development customers. He/she will apply existing knowledge of bioprocess unit operations and operational excellence while learning new processes and the Moderna platform to enable technical success. They will enable technical and operational success while keeping employee safety and product quality front of mind. They will manage a high-performing, flexible operations team capable of meeting a constantly evolving High Throughput Operations timelines and priorities with dotted line responsibilities to supporting groups including Digital, Quality, Robotics, Logistics, and Facilities. They will also provide input to senior management on resource, training, or other needs to ensure business and financial goals are met.
Here’s What You’ll Do:
Ensure safe and high-quality production of DNA, mRNA, and/or LNP
Establish and maintain a safety, quality, and continuous improvement culture driven team
Oversee the hiring, training, development, retention, and performance of staff for execution in HTOPs
Provide on-the-floor coaching of the operations team in execution of the process, troubleshooting, and safety practices
Identify risks and escalate communicate issues that could impact metrics and process performance
Work with process SMEs to develop SOPs and training materials and ensure appropriate training of staff and adherence to established procedures and operational excellence practices
Own and drive good shift handover practices (in partnership with the supervisors on either side of your schedule)
Adhere to laboratory gowning procedures
Adhere to documented waste handling procedures to respect environmental regulations
Exercise independent judgement and decision-making as appropriate
Development of effective working relationships with both HTOPs and cross-functional partners
Support and/or lead continuous improvement projects, goals, and/or OKRs
Dotted line management to junior level staff in the supporting groups (e.g., digital, quality, robotics) of the staggered shift
Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table (Minimum Qualifications):
A BS in engineering or sciences and 8 years of experience in all manufacturing processes in a pharmaceutical or biotechnology environment.
Previous management or project experience is required
Subject Matter Expert on the manufacturing process of DNA, RNA, and/or LNP is preferred.
Highly organized with drive and flexibility to operate in a fast-paced and dynamic workplace
Subject Matter Expert on the manufacture of DNA, RNA, and/or LNP
Thorough knowledge and understanding of standard workflows and on-the floor presence walkthroughs
Ability to work in a team setting
Exceptional analytical and communication skills (oral and written)
Preferred Qualifications:
Subject Matter Expert on the production of DNA, mRNA, and/or LNP is preferred
Experience with cell culture / fermentation operations
Excellent communication and presentation skills
Strong leadership, collaboration, and team building skills
Skill in conflict resolution and crucial conversations (within the team and between functions)
Fluency in digital systems such as MS Teams, Smartsheet, Excel, etc.
Proven ability to assess risk and collaborate with support groups to develop suitable action plans and minimize potential impact
