Brief Position Overview
The Student Success Librarian is one of the librarians responsible for providing library services to the students, faculty, staff and community members at Montana State University Billings. Librarians support the University’s efforts toward meaningful education, enabling learners from diverse backgrounds to achieve intellectual, cultural, and social enrichment. Additionally, the Student Success Librarian specializes in creating an environment that is welcoming, accessible, and inclusive for all students. The Student Success Librarian will be responsible for library’s involvement in outreach services.

Duties and Responsibilities
Student Success:
  • Identify trends and develop effective solutions, innovations, collaborations, and partnerships that advance the current and future needs of the students.
  • Implement and manage digital learning tools and software that support student learning within increasingly flexible teaching and learning environments.
  • Manage the Library’s Springshare platforms including LibGuides, LibAnswers, and LibCal.
  • Continue the Library’s exploration and implementation of new approaches to access and reference services.
  • Create video content for the Library, including tutorials and other informational digital content.
  • Work in partnership with the Library, academic departments, and various student services to promote, support, and achieve retention and graduation goals of the University.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI):
  • Serve as strategic advisor and provide support to library staff to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion in their efforts, services, and scholarship.
  • Serve on the MSU Billings Diversity, Equity, Inclusion Council.
  • Promote inclusive learning pedagogies.
  • Lead in assessing, implementing, and evaluating the Library’s DEI program, in collaboration with other experts in the Library and on campus.
  • Develop new strategies to promote equity of resources between online and in-person learning environments, adapting to new technologies and methodologies that maximize and promote research, teaching, scholarship, and learning.

Outreach:
  • Lead library outreach activities for students, the University, and community members.
  • Initiate, plan, oversee, and conduct a variety of programs and activities to encourage the use of the library by students, staff, faculty, and the community at large.
  • Collaborate with other University departments to support orientation, tutoring, and student government.
  • Work cooperatively with library staff to plan, implement, manage, and assess internal and external library projects as assigned.
  • Promote library services and events through the various social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and emerging services, while maintaining an active presence and working to recruit further engagement.

General:
  • Provide reference services to library users in-person, via phone, email, chat, video conferencing, and other emerging technologies. May include evening and weekend hours.
  • Use new and emerging communication technology, digital resources, and social networking to best promote and deliver library services and connect with students and faculty both on campus and at a distance.
  • Provide library instruction tailored to classes in various disciplines, emphasizing information literacy to support research across the curriculum. Library instruction is offered in-person, through video conferencing, and online tutorials. This can include:
    • Foundational library research skills
    • Higher level discipline specific instruction
    • Personalized one-on-one consultations
  • Teach sections of a 3-credit information literacy course, LSCI 125 Research in the Information Age, as part of the Global Academic Skills category of General Education. Classes may be online, in-person, Hybrid, or HyFlex.
  • Work as a liaison with one or more colleges/departments and develop relationships with faculty and staff to support research, teaching, and learning.
  • Contribute to the Library’s efforts to secure additional resources, especially through grants and other fundraising opportunities.
  • Participate in collection management activities in assigned subject areas, such as book selection and evaluation of electronic resources to ensure relevant and appropriate resources for users based on collection development policy.
  • Explore new areas for collection development taking an expansive view of institutional assets and the role of the library.
  • Evaluate and update library resources and services focusing on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Promote activities associated with Open Educational Resources (OER).
  • Design, maintain, and update the library’s website as assigned.
  • Develop research tools and guides to find information resources with an emphasis on remote access making library resources available anywhere, anytime.
  • Participate in library assessment efforts, identifying indicators of success and developing goals and work plans to improve and enhance services, collections and the environment of the Library.
  • Plan, implement, and manage internal and external library projects as assigned.
  • Engage in professional development activities as appropriate to meet both personal goals and departmental objectives.
  • Serve actively on University committees and engage in other campus activities and events.
  • Participate actively in local, regional, and national library communities, including the TRAILS (Treasure State Academic Information & Library Services) Consortium and others.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Education Required: Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library science program.

Experience Required:
  • Recent experience in reference and user service areas
  • Experience in a library
  • Experience with Library Management Systems (LMS) and specialized library software
  • Background in using and teaching web-based databases, discovery service, internet searching and traditional library reference materials
  • Experience training and supervising staff and student employees
  • Experience providing instruction and research support in an academic library environment
  • Experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a member of the MSU Billings community
  • Experience marketing and promoting library services and activities in an online environment

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Education Preferred: Knowledge of Universal Design for Learning and creating Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as well as Section 508 compliant content.

Experience Preferred:
  • Experience working in a library consortium environment
  • Working knowledge of teaching and learning strategies utilizing the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education
  • Experience in an academic or research library
  • Experience planning, organizing, and promoting outreach activities
  • Involvement and active participation in professional organizations and professional development
  • Working knowledge of best practices relating to copyright, fair use, intellectual property, and scholarly communication
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards as they relate to service to individuals with disabilities in online learning environments

Special Requirements

Physical Demands
Requires sufficient mobility to work in a library setting, operate office equipment, able to lift, push or pull at least 40 lbs. Additional physical demands may include: stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching overhead and horizontally, repetitive hand movements, sitting for extended periods of time, and 6-8 hours of screen time per day.
