- No experience necessary, paid on the job training provided
- Experience performing manual labor in an outdoor or industrial setting is a plus
- Experience working in recycling or waste management facilities is a plus
- Gloves, hard hat, vest and other protective equipment provided
- Must wear one's own steel-toe boots
- Opportunities to work on additional projects with desire to travel
Position Overview
MSW Consultants is hiring 3 Sorters to manually sort and measure disposed trash and recyclables for this research project. Sorting these items helps us to understand what people are throwing away and how to improve their disposal.
Responsibilities
The Sorter will:
- Set up, work within, and break down the established work area daily
- Open trash bags and load material from the refuse onto the top of a specially designed sorting table (up to 50lbs individually, additional weight with another team member)
- Learn the assigned specified number of material categories that make up the waste stream which may include recyclable fibers and cardboard, rigid plastic, film plastic, expanded polystyrene, scrap metals, food waste and other putrescible organics, and inert materials
- Follow efficient procedures for manually sorting material samples into labeled 5-gallon buckets for the specified material categories
- Learn the process for systematically weighing out the sorted materials on a portable scale
- Weigh out the buckets after completing each sort and return the empty buckets back to their proper positions
- Strictly adhere to all safety requirements and procedures specified during training and at the worksite to include properly wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) including personal work boots
- Maintain awareness of potential safety hazards (moving vehicles, sharp objects, etc.) encountered during routine sorting activities
- Complete additional tasks and responsibilities as necessary to achieve the goals of the project
Qualifications
- Reliable with the ability to show up to work consistently and on a timely basis
- Ability and willingness to wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE) for the duration of the day’s work
- Ability to provide and wear one's own steel-toe boots
- Capable of learning various categories of paper, plastic, metals and other waste and recycling within waste streams
- Ability to learn efficient sorting procedures and to sort materials accurately
- Ability to work effectively within a small group of sorters as an efficient, contributing teammate
- Ability to read and speak English clearly
Conditions and Physical Requirements
The Sorter must be able to:
- Walk, stand, bend, stoop, and kneel for extended periods of time per shift requirements
- Lift, carry up to 50lbs
- Use basic hand tools which may include but not limited to push broom, claw tool, shovel, and magnets
- Speak, read, hear, and/or communicate effectively in English and/or Spanish if applicable to project assigned
