JOB SUMMARY
- The Nursing Unit Secretary (NUS) establishes a positive and welcoming presence on the unit.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF POSITION
- Performs clerical and receptionist duties in an organized, efficient, and customer friendly manner.
- Demonstrates age related competencies for the patient population served
- Consistently, accurately, and in a timely manner, transcribes medical orders, enters patient charges, and ensures test results are received and filed.
- Greets visitors, and answers phones, and call lights promptly and courteously.
- Organizes and maintains a clean and well organized environment.
- Ensures that all components of the patient records are properly identified.
- Ensures patient privacy and complies with hospital policies including those related to release of information and privacy.
- Participates in performance improvement activities.
- Functions with a focus on safety and customer service.
- May enter admissions, discharges, bed transfers, labels patient chart and chart racks
- Orders supplies, formula and equipment, completes patient transport logs, returns broken equipment for repair, and may perform other applicable functions to ensure the unit operates smoothly.
- May schedule patient clinic appointments and arrange transportation and escorts per policy.

- May label and prepare patient chart according to clinic,
- Orders supplies and equipment, completes patient transport logs, returns broken equipment for repair, and performs other applicable functions to ensure nursing unit/clinic operates smoothly.
- Notifies radiology and lab of tests ordered, coordinates offsite lab sample pick up and provides other notifications to meet unit/clinic needs.
- Returns records to proper location, and organizes information to be forwarded to medical record at discharge.

- Prefer one year's experience as a Unit Clerk/Receptionist/Secretary or Nursing Assistant in a hospital, doctor's office or clinical setting. Experience in a busy customer service related position required. Experience with entering billing charges desirable.

- Highly effective interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively verbally and in written form with physicians, staff, patients, families, visitors, etc.
- Working knowledge of medical and pharmaceutical terminology
- Display of sensitivity, compassion, tactfulness and helpfulness in dealing with internal and external customers
- Excellent time management and follow-up skills
- Detail oriented and ability to handle multiple tasks
- Computer proficiency
- Knowledge of the billing process

- Interfaces daily with physicians, staff, patients, visitors, other health care team members other health system staff.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT/WORKING CONDITIONS
- Stress dealing with multiple demands. Limited risk of exposure to body fluids, infectious waste or blood borne diseases.
