Job Description

As a Phlebotomist at MUSC, you will play a crucial role in the healthcare team by performing venipuncture and capillary puncture to obtain blood specimens from patients for diagnostic purposes. You will ensure accuracy in specimen labeling, maintain patient comfort and safety during procedures, and adhere to established protocols and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

Perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on patients of varying ages. Label and properly handle specimens for transport to the laboratory. Verify patient information and ensure accurate documentation of procedures. Maintain cleanliness and organization of phlebotomy equipment and work area. Assist in maintaining adequate inventory of phlebotomy supplies.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a phlebotomy training program or equivalent experience.
  • Current certification as a Phlebotomist preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and infection control protocols.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for long periods and move quickly between patient rooms.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to perform venipuncture and handle phlebotomy equipment.
  • Visual acuity to read labels and accurately document information.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds (boxes of supplies).
