Minimum Requirements: An associate's degree in animal husbandry, agriculture or a related field and three years of work experience that is directly related to the area of employment. Work experience that is directly related to the area of employment may be substituted for the associate's degree on a year-for-year basis. Certification in an animal care technology field may be required for positions overseeing the care of laboratory animals. Veterinary Technician Certification may be used in lieu of the years of experience.

Job Description
1.1 Oversee and Manage Husbandry Operations. 30%
- Ensure all subordinates, husbandry, and cage wash, duties are completed as outlined in the employee job descriptions and the DLAR SOPs.
- Coordinate animal transfers/imports with diagnostic lab and other facility supervisors.
- Coordinate with the diagnostic lab for sentinel testing and environmental monitoring.
1.2 Perform Administrative Duties. 25%
- Enter Census Data in animal management software.
- Record keeping of animal, equipment, and facility documents.
- Maintains the inventory of caging, equipment, and supplies for the facility.
- Coordinates animal husbandry schedules with other facility supervisors.
- Participate in SOP development and review.
- Attend and participate in weekly management and supervisor meetings.
- Updates facility contact list as needed.
1.3 Leadership Duties. 20%
- Demonstrate respect and professionalism in interactions with MUSC and DLAR staff, students, and visitors.
- Manage subordinate files. Keep track of leave balances, attendance accruals, and training documents.
- Available and open to questions from subordinates about how to best perform job role.
- Demonstrate effective email and verbal communications to all MUSC staff and students.
- Make work assignments within the facility for subordinates.
- Ensure subordinates are aware of their rights and responsibilities regarding health, safety,
- Evaluate the performance of subordinates through the MUSC electronic system.
- Provide and document actionable feedback to subordinates for performance improvement.
- Provides disciplinary actions when required and as directed.
- Conduct regular staff meetings with subordinates.
Facilitate problem-solving among subordinates and other members of the DLAR team.
1.4 Facility Maintenance. 15%
- Facilitate all physical plant maintenance, repairs, and renovations to assure compliance with USDA, NIH, and AAALAC standards.
- Communicate with Program Manager for all DLAR equipment repair and maintenance, as needed.
- Promptly report facility problems using physical plant software.
1.5 Personnel Training. 5%
- Work with subordinates to identify training goals and opportunities.
- Coordinate and assign new employees to knowledgeable staff for hands-on training.
- Ensure completion of mandatory/required training.
- Prepare and coach staff on AALAS test certification preparations.
- When required, clearly and accurately explain, and demonstrate work procedures, expected performance, and basic knowledge to perform husbandry operations in accordance with DLAR SOPs.
- When required, train new employees and Pis on basic techniques pertinent to each species.
- When required, conduct training of investigative staff and subordinates on equipment, safety related SOPs, and OSHA safety standards.
1.6 Perform Other Duties as Assigned. 5%
- Provide backup for supervisors when required. This can include sending email notifications/ communication and monitoring animal rooms and other duties as requested.
- Check and report any issues to the program manager.
- Perform euthanasia of rodents as directed.
