Under the supervision of a higher classified officer, responds to emergency fire and rescue service requests as part of a firefighting company. Carries out a variety of tasks relating to setting up firefighting apparatus, controlling fires and lifesaving, using defined procedures and practices. In addition, performs routine maintenance and cleaning of fire equipment and physical facilities of the fire station.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee's environment can range from an office setting to highly dangerous fire suppression situations. Physical demands, therefore, range from sitting in an office or vehicle to possibly exercising the strength, mobility, dexterity, and stamina associated with firefighting. The employee is regularly required to communicate with others in person and on the telephone or radio. The employee must regularly travel to other locations and may be required to lift items of heavy weight.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to adverse weather conditions, extreme heat, high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, explosives and other dangerous situations. The noise level in the work environment can range from quiet to very loud.Written Exam - Pass/Fail

EVALUATION CONTENT
The selected candidate must take a post-offer medical examination (including back screen and complete physical) and drug screening test given by a City appointed physician before the first day of employment. An offer of employment is contingent upon the results of the medical examination and drug screening test. Applicants for City employment may be subject to a post-offer criminal background check, depending on the nature and assignment of the position. When such check is conducted, an offer of employment is contingent upon the results of the criminal background check. Appointees must satisfactorily complete a probationary period before the appointment will be considered permanent.

The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list from which to fill present and future vacancies in this classification in the City system. For each opening, the Department Head has her/his choice of the candidates who meet the required minimum entrance qualifications. This list remains in effect for up to one year unless exhausted or extended.
Education:
- Possession of a high school diploma or the equivalent.
- This is an entry level position; no specific prior experience is required.
- Twelve months probationary period.
- Firefighter I and II.
- Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) at time of hire. If only have MFR, then EMT must complete certification within one (1) year of hire.
- Valid Vehicle Operator's License, a satisfactory driving record, and the ability to maintain one throughout employment.
- Other requirements as specified by collective bargaining agreements.
