Job Summary:

Pediatric Dentistry is an age-defined branch of dentistry that provides both primary and comprehensive preventive and therapeutic oral health care for infants and children through adolescence, including those with special health care needs. The position is responsible for assessing, diagnosing, providing treatment plans, prescribing medication therapy, and offering counsel across the lifespan. This position is expected to follow patient centered medical home (PCMH) guidelines and principles. The Pediatric Dentist is responsible for providing oral care and treatment for children from infancy through their teenage years. The appropriate individual should love working with kids and know how to put them at ease in what is often a stressful situation. Compassion and patience are just as important as clinical aptitude in this specialty discipline.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Examines individuals requesting care, diagnoses dental/oral conditions, prescribes, and carries out (or directs others in carrying out) appropriate dental/oral treatment
  • Provide routine and emergency dental services to children (0 to 18years old), including diagnosis and treatment plans, general restorative procedures, crowns, uncomplicated endodontics, and oral surgery
  • Administer anesthetics and Oral Sedation (Level 2 sedation)
  • Adhere with the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners’ requirements for Pediatric Dentists
  • Refers patients for specialty consultation or treatment in conformance with approved clinical protocols and guidelines
  • Records patient-dentist transactions as they occur in the patient’s dental record so that the dental record accurately and completely reflects the nature of the contact, the condition of the patient and the care or treatment provided
  • Educates the community, patients, and family in oral health related conditions and in the general promotion of oral health related disease prevention
  • Serves on the center’s Performance Improvement Committee, Peer Review Committee and other committees as assigned
  • Assists in the provision of continuing education, on-the-job training, and the orientation of CHN staff as requested
  • Participates in short- and long-term program planning for the Dental department and the center including development of goals and objectives
  • Assists in the coordination and integration of CHN’s dental programs and services with other programs and services for the welfare of CHN’s patients
  • Ensures full compliance with all applicable federal, state, local and center, regulations, protocols, and procedures governing the practice of dentistry and the clinical provision of dental care; as well as those relating to, but not limited to, personnel issues, workplace safety, public health, and confidentiality
  • Provide comprehensive oral care for patients aged 0 months to 18 years old
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management

Preferred Skills/Abilities:

  • Open Dental
  • Ability to be clinically fluent in Spanish
  • Knowledge of public health principles and practices

Required Education and Experience:

  • Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree from a dental education program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation
  • Completed a Pediatric Residency accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation
  • Certificates, licenses, and registrations required:
  • Licensed by the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners as a general dentist
  • Possess a National Board Dental Examination license for general dentistry
  • Possess and maintain a Board Certification for Pediatric Dentistry in the state of Texas
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Active Level 2 Sedation permit in good standing with the TSBDE
  • Must possess a current unrestricted DEA

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • At least 4 years of pediatric clinical experience
