Responsibilities

  • Software Technical Writer III is responsible for the text within the user-facing areas of web and software applications. Utilizes knowledge and practical experience and exercises judgment in applying document design and usability standards to work and completing assigned tasks in an efficient and timely manner. Responsible for text within two or more product lines.
  • Acts as editor for UX designers and researchers, applying familiarity with usability principles.
  • Authors and maintains the UX style and voice standards.
  • Ensures that work produced by self and others is consistent with content style guides.
  • Participates as an observer and assistant in usability testing or other user experience research activities, proofreading scenarios as requested, taking notes and contributing to user experience research findings. Attends presentations of user experience research findings and uses recommendations from usability testing to create solutions to identified usability issues regarding Web site or application text. Researches and applies a basic understanding of user experience methodologies and best practices.
  • Works with UX designers and researchers, engineering and product management and other stakeholders to understand audience needs, business needs, and stakeholder requirements and then and then edits the text within the user experience of web and software-based interfaces.
  • Keeps abreast of editing best practices and developments. Incorporates trends and best practices within assignments as appropriate. Recommends improvements and helps define best practices within the company and gives professional appraisal on implementation as planned and/or executed.
  • Consults with engineers and key contacts outside engineering regarding the software or web application to have a strong understanding of functionality and business and technical issues so they can write interface text accordingly.
  • Works on projects of diverse scope and complexity requiring independent action and decision making. Exercises judgment, applying creativity and ingenuity in the investigation and solution of information design problems. Normally requires no instructions on routine work and only general instructions on new assignments.
  • Leads projects and organizes additional resources; responsible for determining own schedule based on team sprint cycles and work assignments and occasionally guides those of others. Coordinates and manages assigned projects to completion, i.e., plans projects, provides estimates and sets milestones, records and reports project status and metrics.
  • Communicates own status and blocking issues to team as work is completed. Provides estimates, defines milestones, schedules and tasks for projects of moderate and complex scope. Monitors progress of assigned projects. Advises manager on resource issues to ensure that projects are adequately staffed.
  • Formally or informally presents deliverables to internal stakeholders and obtains approval to move projects forward and drive them to completion. Holds content reviews with UX designers and scrum teams and formally presents deliverables to project stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • BA degree or equivalent in Technical Communication, Writing, Editing, English, Journalism or a related field and a minimum of 5 years of directly related work experience is typically required. 3 years of work experience is required for individuals holding an MFA/MPW degree in one of these fields. Equivalent experience may be substituted for formal education.
  • Must have experience defining information design and/or creating interface text for multiple complex software, web applications and/or significant e-commerce Web sites. Knowledge of and experience editing user interface text for Mac or Windows software or Web applications is required.
  • Expertise with three or more of the following software tools for creating deliverables is required: Microsoft Office, Figma, Miro and Confluence (or equivalent screenshot programs and corporate wikis). Strong expertise in one or more of these tools is highly desired. Prior experience using a content library is required.
