What are the responsibilities and job description for the Safety Director position at Nash Plumbing and Mechanical?
The Director of Safety is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the safety initiatives and safety loss control programs across the company. Responsible for the development of a safety and risk management culture dedicated to being best in class. Accountable for enterprise compliance with all federal, state, and industry regulations, including OSHA.

- Plan, organize, evaluate, and direct the implementation of Nashs safety program.
- Lead the development of and clearly articulated Company safety vision, objectives, strategies, policies, and procedures in order to build a safety culture dedicated to being best-in-class.
- Establishing what minimum program and training requirements are in accordance with OSHA CFR, state, local or industry-specific standards.
- Identify when deficiencies exist in programs, training modules, and implementation of safe practices and develop solutions to satisfy those gaps.
- Establishing quantifiable training requirements for each employee specific to their position or job duties.
- Coordinate training of employees on established programs.
- Formulate a system to track training and identify when retraining/refreshing must occur.
- House all training certifications.
- Implement all program requirements in the field.
- Audit implementations on a consistent basis to ensure compliance.
- Assign SMART corrective actions based on audit findings.
- Follow a system to track all audit findings to closure.
- Make informed decisions based on noncompliance issues.
- Implement Industry Best Practices when appropriate.
- Develop procedures for auditing compliance with applicable safety regulations and internal safety practices including, but not limited to, OSHA logs
- Advise as subject matter expert in preventative measures, incident investigations, post-accident/post-incident corrective actions, compliance reporting, etc.
- Evaluate current training, policies, software, etc., and identify solutions to improve. Oversee implementation and ongoing use of any recommendations.
- Conduct or assist with in-person training as needed (i.e. OSHA 10 & 30 hr., Foreman training)
- Lead and participate in Safety Committee
- Mentor direct reports and supervisors to enable them to achieve a high level of proficiency and independence within the safety program
- Create an environment of learning, mentoring, and empowerment to promote employee engagement.
- Develop all required OSHA policies and forms as needed
- Support the company by creating and updating the training library of compliance-related topics
- Promote safe driving practices, including but not limited, to defensive driving training, telematics scorecard and Motor Vehicle Record monitoring, and at-fault accident corrective actions.
- Works closely with Risk Management on governance and compliance-related tasks
- Participates in monthly operations reviews to review monthly safety statistics.
OTHER DUTIES:
- Perform hazard assessments on each of the tasks performed within the company to identify safety measures to be enacted for said tasks.
- Implement safe measures.
- Audit to ensure compliance with safety measures.
- Manage contractor qualification sites (ISNET, etc.).
- Perform annual safety self-assessments, system assessments, and program audits.
- Develop and train employees on company-specific safety orientation (each employee should be trained on specific hazards associated with their craft PRIOR to commencing any work).
- Formulate a system to identify and mentor short-service employees.
- Ensure incident reporting occurs and perform (along with supervisors) an in-depth incident investigation.
- Perform industry-established Root Cause Analysis to determine the root cause of incidents.
- Formulate and assign SMART corrective actions following root cause determinations. Track those actions to closure.
- Work with employees and medical professionals on injury care management, claims management, and return to work protocols.
- Establish a daily JSA process for identifying hazards prior to the start of work. Track JSAs to ensure completion. Audit JSAs to establish quality.
- Develop, monitor, and assist in drug and alcohol compliance.
- Pre-qualify subcontractors to ensure they meet a minimum standard. Audit subcontractors to ensure continued compliance. (Same could be said for temp workers).
- Become subject matter experts on safe work activities and establish quantifiable measures to ensure 100% compliance with those activities.
- Manage company SMS system.
- Manage HAZCOM program ensure SDS compliance per site
- Develop site-specific health and safety plans per site. Develop site-specific emergency response plans.
- Ensure up-to-date OSHA record keeping and reporting.
- Ability to lead a direct report.
