Director - Underwriting
This position requires strong leadership abilities, necessary to effectively lead a large underwriting team, driving productivity as well as quality risk selection. In addition, this position requires superior relationship building skills that can effectively manage and strengthen field relations. This role is expected to contribute positively to the profitable growth of the company through prudent and profitable underwriting decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
Work on highly complex underwriting risks; provides guidance on the most complex applications to staff underwriters
Assist in developing underwriting policies and operating plans
Establish and maintain strong field relationships to help Distribution successfully grow sales
Mentor and guide less experienced underwriters and assist in development of underwriting training
Participate in underwriting audits to ensure regulatory compliance
Coordinate and monitor successful collaboration with internal supporting functions such as actuarial, claim, risk control, legal/regulatory and other business units to ensure alignment with overall strategy and goals
Participate in the evaluation and development of new and existing life products
Work in a team atmosphere with New Business leadership
May be responsible for special underwriting projects and presentations as directed by Senior Vice President, Operations and Vice President, Chief Underwriter
Work with vendors as necessary to ensure the department is well supported
Job Requirements
Bachelor's degree
10-15 years of life underwriting experience; preferred background would include designations such as FMLI, CLU or other course work within the AALU, LOMA or similar industry organizations
Experience in signing-off on large cases exceeding five million in face amount
Previous experience with simplified issue and tele-underwriting
Prior work experience with independent field force
Must be able to communicate in an effective manner, both verbal and written
Demonstrated skill in developing risk management and underwriting programs
Ability to work independently as well as being a strong team player
Must be able to prioritize management and field requests
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; strong business acumen
LTC and DI experience a plus
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment; must be action and results oriented
Must be able to pass a background check
The base compensation range represents the low and high end of the range for this position. Actual compensation will vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to qualifications, skills, competencies, location, and experience. The range listed is just one component of our total compensation package for employees.
Other rewards may include an annual bonus, quarterly bonuses, commissions, and other long-term incentive compensation, depending on the position.
