What are the responsibilities and job description for the Archeological Technician position at National Park Service?

This position is located in Southeast Archaeological Center in Tallahassee, FL.

Term Appointment - Time limited not to exceed 4 year.

Qualifications:

In order to qualify for Archeological Technician, GS-0102-07 position, you must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience includes 1) Museum or archeological collections work, 2) generate catalog records and complete data entry into a collections database, 3) sort, analyze/identify, and process collections, and 4) conduct research on archeological or museum collections.

OR

Have successfully completed one full year (18 semester hours) of progressively higher-level graduate education. To be qualifying, graduate study must have been in archeology, anthropology, Museum Studies or other closely related field. You must include transcripts.

OR

Have a combination Education and Experience: Equivalent combinations of education and experience as described above that meets 100% of the requirements for this position. You must include transcripts.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".

Responsibilities:

This is a lab-based position that requires an archeological background. The primary duties of this position are to 1) identify and analyze archeological objects from sites of all time periods and throughout the southeast U.S.; and 2) catalog resulting data into the designated NPS catalog program using established NPS procedures. Other primary duties include the following: Unpacking archeological objects and processing them; perform limited cleaning; identify preservation needs and recommend additional actions. Repacking objects with care, assuring complete labeling that preserves data associated with the objects. Prepares, maintains, and organizes manual and automated curatorial records including catalog records; maintains and organizes other records, such as inventories and object lists. Performs routine research for catalog records and other purposes as assigned. Performs routine cleaning of objects as directed and according to established standards; Serves as team member on curatorial projects such as the elimination of cataloging backlogs.
