Duties
The park formerly known as the City of Refuge National Historical Park was established in 1961. Its 182-acres contains numerous archeological features including: the Royal Grounds where generations of ali'i (high chiefs) of Kona once resided, the pu'uhonua a place of refuge where early Hawaiians who broke a kapu (law) could seek refuge and avoid death, the Great Wall a 1000 foot long wall built around 1550 that surrounds and protects the pu`uhonua, the reconstructed Hale o Keawe that once housed the bones of 23 ali'i giving this pu'uhonua its great sanctity, a complex of archeological sites, royal fishponds, holua slides, and some coastal village sites. In 2004, NPS acquired an additional 238 acres in the Ki'ilae ahupua'a. This acquisition included numerous sites, structures and features including an ancient Hawaiian settlement dating back to the late 12th century and remaining active up until 1930, the 1871 trail, several heiau (temple platform), residential compounds, a holua slide, a canoe landing, a water well and a wide range of agricultural features.Government housing is not available.
Special Consideration: The Island of Hawaii is subject to high concentrations of volcanic fumes, especially sulfur dioxide gasses. The fumes are known to be hazardous to an unborn fetus, and persons with heart and respiratory problems. The Kona coast primarily experiences vog conditions throughout the year, and occasionally eastern Hawaii Island and other Hawaiian islands. Long-term effects on normal healthy persons are unknown
