The Patient Safety and Simulation Education Coordinator is responsible for planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating skills and simulation-based education initiatives of Nationwide Children’s Hospital (NCH) and its subsidiaries in collaboration with clinical experts. The Coordinator is also responsible for administration and operations of the Simulation Lab.

Responsibilities

1. Educational Programs:

a. Teaches skills and simulation-based courses to healthcare professionals and trainees/students including, but not limited to, physicians, nurses, paramedics, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and dentists.

b. Develops, plans, coordinates, and teaches PALS, simulation, and other courses to achieve the skills/competencies necessary to meet patient care needs. May teach courses at off-site locations.

c. Incorporates appropriate technology to accomplish effective outcomes.

d. Evaluates education activities and measures long term outcomes of programs.

e. Is competent in course content required for the position.

f. Administers program and manages course content. Coordinates periodic program review to assure that the content meets NCH standards.

g. Mentor new instructors. Assures that programs are delivered according quality standards established by Education.

h. Participates in curriculum development and identification of educational needs for new and existing programs

 

2. Customer Service:

a. Presents a welcoming environment for participants and portrays a positive, enthusiastic, and professional attitude.

b. Communicates effectively with internal customers and serves as an ambassador for education within NCH and in the community

c. Resolves customer concerns in a timely manner. Deescalates problems and manages conflict effectively.

 

3. Administrative & Fiscal Management:

a. Communicates with Manager relevant program information in a timely manner.

b. Operates within budget.

c. Produces reports and other expected results on time and within budget at expected quality level.

 

4. Physical Environment:

a. Maintains cleanliness and order in the simulation lab.

b. Works with Assistant to schedule space and equipment.

c. Is responsible for cleaning, maintenance, and re-supply of equipment. Performs routine maintenance and coordinates necessary repairs in a timely manner.

 

5. Other Duties:

a. Performs duties within the framework of the policies and procedures and clinical standards as set forth by Nationwide Children’s Hospital and Education.

b. Supports the philosophy and objectives of NCH and assists with interpreting these to participants.

c. Participants in committees and other activities as assigned by Manager.

d. Maintains professional certification and other required education. Stays current with new developments. Participates in ongoing professional development activities

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE , SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

 

Education and Training Required

1. BSN required, MSN preferred.

2. Special expertise in skills-based training

3. Clinical background required.

4. Current PALS certification highly preferred.

5. Computer programing knowledge preferred.

 

Experience Required

1. Three years clinical experience, at least two years in an inpatient (hospital-based) care, required. Three to five years pediatric clinical experience preferred.

2. Prior experience must demonstrate the ability to work well with individuals of various backgrounds and motivate them to work toward competency development.

3. Demonstrated skills-based teaching experience. Simulation experience preferred but not required. Experience in role playing and debriefing helpful. Three to five years adult classroom teaching experience required.

 

Other Skills Required

1. Excellent multi-tasker who is detail-oriented

2. Demonstrated ability to manage complex tasks involving a few to several hundred people

3. Demonstrated oral and written communication, group process and team leading skills required.

4. Experience in policy development, fiscal and project management, analytical and technological ability necessary to gather data, evaluate options and make recommendations.

5. Facile in computer use of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, AV equipment

6. Must have current Ohio driver’s license for travel as necessary.

 

MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Drives throughout Central and Southeastern Ohio – occasionally.

2. Lifts, reaches, carries, pulls, and pushes educational materials up to 25 pounds – frequently.

3. Talks with and listens to customers concerning education – constantly. Must be able to see, hear, stand, walk, read, and perform manual tasks with or without accommodation and care for oneself with little or no difficulty – constantly.
