Established in 1994, Nauticus is a maritime discovery center that hosts 350,000 visitors annually and is home to the Nauticus Museum, Sail Nauticus sailing center, Schooner Virginia, the Battleship Wisconsin, and the Half Moone Cruise Terminal. Nauticus’ mission is to benefit the community through education, impactful experiences, and sharing access to maritime resources.
This position is funded by the Nauticus Foundation, the 501(c)3 nonprofit, raising funds to support the mission and activities of Nauticus.
Job Description
Sail Nauticus is looking for skilled, enthusiastic, and competent sailing instructors for our 2024-2025 school year. As a Sail Nauticus instructor, you will assist in teaching our sailing curriculum to 5th - 8th grade Norfolk Public School students. Instructors must also be able to safely navigate a busy commercial waterway while ensuring a safe, organized, and educational experience for our students. Other duties include minor maintenance and upkeep of our equipment, facilities, and fleet. Paid Training is provided.
Duties and Responsibilities:
· Co-lead educational STEM lessons alongside Sail Nauticus Educators
· Keep middle school students engaged and supported during programming
· Safely oversee a small group of middle school students for land-based and on-the-water instruction
· Operate a keelboat in an active harbor
Qualifications:
· Experience operating a keelboat with multiple passengers in an active waterfront
· Experience working with or teaching youth
· Experience teaching sailing
· Must possess Virginia Safe Boating Certification
· US Sailing Basic Keelboat
· First Aid and CPR Certifications
Hours: Monday -Thursday from 2:30 -6:30 pm. September 23, 2024-May 17, 2025
Compensation: $17-$20 an hour
