What are the responsibilities and job description for the General Counsel position at Nearmap?

Reporting to the Chief Finance Officer, this newly created and diverse role oversees the legal and regulatory affairs of Nearmap in the North American region, supporting the broader business where required in other regions where the group operates.
This role also includes providing Legal Counsel to the Board of Directors, Chief Executive Officer, and the senior management of the North American business. Our legal team is recognized as trusted advisors by our business, therefore the individual must possess strong initiative, and business judgment, including the ability to anticipate and analyze any potential impacts and consequences of decisions/initiatives and recommendations.
Key responsibilities
- Overseeing the delivery of legal services and resources to accomplish corporate and commercial goals, strategies, and priorities
- Developing and leading internal legislative, regulatory, and corporate compliance programs within the North American region
- Providing guidance and advice to the Board of Directors and senior management on all matters of litigation, liaising with external counsel to formulate strategy, deploy resources and manage all stages of the legal process
- Maintaining proper corporate interactions with the relevant local, state, and federal governmental bodies, legislatures, and the community at large
- Participating in the formulation of general management policy as a member of the regional executive management team
- Managing a team of legal counsel and other members of the legal department
About you
You will possess a minimum of 20-year post-admission experience, at least 10 years of in-house experience, and 10 years of experience in leadership roles (e.g. Head of Legal, Director, Associate General Counsel). IP litigation experience is paramount, as is breadth and depth of knowledge across disciplines relevant to a SaaS technology company (corporate, privacy, licensing, IP, litigation, financing, and employment issues). It is naturally assumed you are skilled at negotiating complex corporate and commercial contracts as well as the experience in managing external counsel, within high-growth multinational organizations.
In addition:
- Excellent academic credentials (graduate of a leading law school)
- Admitted to the bar and in good standing or otherwise authorized to practice law such as being registered as an in-house in the state in which the position is located
- Strong project management skills, with the ability to carry ideas forward with confidence while working proactively, independently, and transparently
- Able to communicate and interact effectively at all levels
- Have a strong history of successful cross-functional collaboration
- Understanding of and interest in technology, machine learning and aspects of GIS.
Role location: based in either Salt Lake City, Utah or West Coast region USA. Must be willing to
travel within North America (as required)
