What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Student Services position at Nebraska State College System?
Nature of Work
Duties include, but are not limited to, fostering an appreciation for students, (undergraduate, residential and commuter; in-person and on-line), from diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds. Will implement case management with struggling students (which could include, working directly with the following departments: CARE team, Residence Life, Counseling Services, Security, and other campus stakeholders). Will oversee areas of Disability Services, Counseling services, SSS TRiO grant, and direct efforts and programs designed to address mental health challenges faced by students as well as oversee retention efforts with students and best practices to support these students. This position will play an integral role with campus CARE Team in supporting, implementation, and oversight of student cases. This includes: meetings, follow-up with students, and consultation with the AVP of Student Affairs for next steps in the CARE Team process.
Examples of Work Performed
o Oversees areas of Disability Services, Counseling services, SSS TRiO grant, and staff in Center for Achievement and Transition Services.
o Direct efforts and programs designed to address mental health challenges faced by students
o Oversee retention efforts with students and best practices to support these students.
o Provide direct academic follow up and coaching with students who may be on probationary status or considerable risk for academic success.
o Oversee CATS budget.
o Implement Case Management with struggling students. This could include, working directly with the following departments: CARE team, Residence Life, Counseling Services, CATS, Security, and other campus stakeholders.
o Will serve as part of campus CARE Team.
o Assist with campus conduct and the student judicial affairs process.
o Assist with the planning and implementation of Welcome Week as a part of new student arrival to campus. This would include supporting the Welcome Week Committee.
o The DSS will serve on College committees and fosters an appreciation for students, (undergraduate, residential and commuter; in-person and on-line), from diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds
o Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree required in student services related field plus 3 years of related experience preferred in the areas of: Student Affairs, Housing, Counseling.
Must have ability to support and mentor students and possess effective leadership and supervisory experience.
Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills and have strong organizational skills, and have the ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds.
Strong background in student case management, most notably with student mental health issues and using best practices to support student success.
