Job Summary:  Perform work in connection with the construction, installation, repair, maintenance, and operation of telephone line, instruments and related equipment, on or off subscriber premises. Generally responsible, under limited supervision, for all aspects of normal exchange operation. 

 

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Install, modify, or disconnect customer service in accordance with company issued service orders.
  • Locate and repair service on customer and company lines in accordance with company issued trouble reports.
  • Communicate and work with customer service and plant records department to advise when service orders and trouble reports have been completed. Must keep accurate records.
  • Complete all forms, reports and time sheets as required by the company.
  • Repair various types of trouble on cable plant and drop wires.
  • Install, modify, disconnect or repair customer service on multi-line key systems.
  • Must be familiar with proper use of tools and work equipment including hoisting, digging, or trenching equipment. Ensure that all tools or work equipment are in good working order and properly use, maintain and store tools and work equipment.  Report defective tools or equipment in order that they may be replaced or repaired.
  • Must be familiar with installation and maintenance of analog and digital carrier systems.
  • Is familiar with the considerable hazards that exist in connection with the construction or maintenance of any phase of outside plant work. This includes falls, electric shock or flash, falling objects and traffic.  Is familiar with and uses protective equipment and safety practices and is able to provide first aid and artificial respiration.
  • Operate automotive equipment when assigned. Comply with all traffic laws, safety rules, regulations and safe practices.  Keep informed of all system policies and procedures.
  • Attend and participate in all safety and training meetings scheduled.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must have a working knowledge of all system test equipment and electronic equipment.
  • Able to interpret cable records, staking sheets, specification sheets and circuit diagrams
  • Able to meet and deal with public in such a way as to maintain good subscriber relations.
  • Able to accept responsibility for, and work under, occasional stress situations.
  • Memory for and attention to numerous details.
  • Able to maintain workflow, prevent bottlenecks and prevent hazards.
  • Must have or be able to obtain Class 1 DOT commercial driver’s license and possess an insurable status according to the company’s motor vehicle liability insurance standards.
  • Must have basic computer skills.


Education/Experience

  • Journeyman combination technician with a minimum of three years experience in that position is desired.
  • Two-year associate’s degree in electronics is preferred.
  • Experience operating digging equipment and vehicles helpful.


Physical Demands

  • Physical exertion may be medium to heavy.
  • Climbs, stoops, crawls, reaches, handles, lifts.
  • May be required to climb poles.
  • May work outdoors in all kinds of weather.
  • Cannot be colorblind.
  • Wears all employee safety devices as required.


Special Demands

  • Works under supervision.
  • Hours scheduled.
