What are the responsibilities and job description for the Guidance Counselor position at New York City Charter School?
NYC Charter School of the Arts (CSA) is an arts-integrated charter school located in the financial district of Manhattan. We seek to inspire a diverse community of young people to engage with the arts as a pathway to rich and rigorous academic scholarship and a creative, purposeful life. We accomplish this as a school community through three interlocking domains: Create, Learn & Thrive.
Currently in its 8th year of operation, we are looking for an experienced Guidance Counselor to join our team for the 2024-2025 school year. The Guidance Counselor will collaborate with the Social Worker, with the Deans, and with classroom teachers to ensure our students grow as individuals and as members of a community of scholars and creators who uphold our core values.
Objectives

Implement programs and initiatives to sustain a strengths-based, preventative, and restorative school culture and community

Collaborate with student support team and instructional team to build and sustain CSA’s MTSS systems and structures.

In partnership with social worker and deans, provide informal and mandated counseling services.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

Implement Thrive initiatives to shape school culture (i.e. developing common language and approaches to integrating social emotional learning into instruction and culture) and monitor at-risk students;

Contribute to and participate in professional development sessions for all CSA staff about MTSS systems, restorative practice, and the collection and analysis of behavioral data;

Support teachers’ use of logical consequences and restorative practice within the classroom.

Providing informal counseling and reflection support as part of incident management and reintegration processes. Coach students in order to develop their abilities to thrive in the CSA community.

Develop Individual Student Support Plans in collaboration with deans.

Regularly communicate with parents for the purpose of developing intervention plans, contracts, and other supports.
Other Duties

Chaperone field trips; attend at least two evening events - family nights, presentations, or performances per semester

Attend formal parent conferences twice a year as needed

Fulfill varied school needs, including elevator, hall, lunch duty, after school commitments as needed

Other duties, as assigned by the Director of Supported Education, the Executive Director, or designee
The ideal candidate will have:

Bachelor’s Degree (Masters degree preferred)

Met criteria to provide mandated and informal counseling
-
3 - 5 years experience as a Guidance Counselor; Middle School preferred

Track record of building and contributing to a strengths-based, preventative, and restorative community culture. Background experience with structures and concepts such as: data analysis, multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS), logical consequences, and restorative practice

Desire to grow as a professional

Knowledge of mindfulness practices
