What are the responsibilities and job description for the Intake Advocate - Bilingual position at NEWS?
Position Summary
The NEWS Intake Advocate addresses specific needs of survivors of domestic and sexual assault seeking support. The Intake Advocate’s primary functions are to address emergency needs and safety, provide crisis intervention, and ensure proper referrals to services within NEWS and to other partner agencies in the community.
Primary Duties
· First point of contact for new clients, must greet with professionalism, equity and sensitivity.
· Provide initial assessment and screener for in and out of agency referrals around safety and immediate needs that may include; filing police reports, protective orders, financial assistance for food, shelter transportation, security cameras, prepaid phones, etc.
· Assist clients in finding therapy using their own insurance, and process requests to receive assistance with co-pays and therapy fees.
· Maintain program records and statistics and collect data for monthly reports.
· Provide transportation and mobile advocacy, or respond to law enforcement requests for an advocate, as needed.
· Ability to work well with people from diverse social-economic, ethnic & cultural backgrounds.
· Ability to maintain strict adherence to confidentiality.
· Display calm demeanor and good judgment in an environment charged with emotion and stress.
· Ability to be flexible and help other departments as needed and time allows.
· Attend all necessary agency meetings and attend NEWS events as needed.
· Prepare monthly and quarterly reports as requested.
Education, Experience & Language Skills
Education in psychology, social work, counseling or family studies, or experience working with vulnerable and/ or traumatized populations. Nonprofit experience a plus. Ability to communicate clearly in writing, orally in English and in Spanish, with strong organizational skills. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedures. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from supervisors, peers, donors, board, general public, etc.
Computer Skills, Certificates, Licenses, & Registrations
Proven ability to work with a variety of programs including Word, Excel, Client Database, etc. Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Counselor Certificate (or attain after hire). Valid California Driver’s License required and current vehicle registration. Other mandatory certifications as needed.
