Job Description
Your new opportunity at the AFR
The Australian Financial Review is seeking a reporter to cover business and politics in Western Australia.
We are looking to employ an enthusiastic news breaking journalist with a good contact base and working knowledge of the Western Australian business community and political scene.
Previous reporting experience in business and/or politics would be an advantage.
Day to day you will be responsible for:
- Breaking news stories for digital and for print on WA business and politics.
- Covering profit and other major company announcements, writing features and analysis.
- Reporting on WA politics in a national context
- Reporting on interactions between WA politicians, business leaders and the federal government.
- Covering WA’s colourful business identities, unique lifestyle and culture
- Conducting interviews with top executives, company directors and politicians.
- Developing and maintaining respectful, productive working relationships with key contacts
- Working collaboratively with other members of the national/companies reporting teams.
Qualifications

The successful applicant will be a self-starter who is able to turn their hand to writing news, features and commentary.
They will be keen to contribute across the masthead filing for daily blogs, as well as afr.com, the newspaper, Financial Review Magazine, and other channels.
In order to succeed you will ideally have:
- Previous experience in a major newsroom
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and take initiative
- Ability to be a positive team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Be a compelling writer who is able to deliver clear, lively news, feature stories and profiles.
- Be across the main issues and drivers affecting WA politics and business
- Possess a thorough knowledge of the main players in WA politics and business
- Be a hard-working self-starter, with resilience, energy and passion for WA
