Overview:
The candidate would be responsible for empowering the residents to become active in the development of their community. Is responsible for the planning, implementation, and successful completion of outreach and organizing efforts in the community around housing-related issues. This person is also responsible for the identification and training of volunteers, particularly on the impact of neighborhood redevelopment, zoning, and mapping. Will serve as a liaison between organization departments and programs to find solutions to neighborhood needs. Will manage the Community Organizer.
Responsibilities:
Develop a process for identifying and successfully representing families in the neighborhood with problems like adverse possession cases, land bank applications, help with property damage caused by developers, amongst others.
Work with neighborhood residents to identify community problems and collaborate to devise strategies to address them either by utilizing existing NSCA programs or developing new initiatives.
Create projects or programs that encourage a sense of belonging in the residents and increase social and cultural development.
Work with block captains to strengthen them and develop block leadership.
Work with the community to create policies to protect the neighborhood and promote sustainable growth.
Support NSCA staff efforts to coordinate and implement home improvement & home repair programs on targeted blocks.
Oversee the zoning committee and serve as a liaison between the committee and the community by supervising and advising the zoning coordinator.
Develop and empower community leaders through education in leadership and policy planning.
Effectively supervise the assigned staff.
Develop and maintain an annual program planning process.
Responsible for compliance with contracts and agreements pertaining to community outreach.
Qualification:
BA in social work, sociology or political sciences preferred. Masters in social community psychology desired
Prior experience as a community organizer and/or outreach, volunteer recruiter a must
Bilingual English/Spanish a must
Ability and willingness to work some evenings and weekends
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Strong interpersonal skills and negotiation skills
Must be able to interact and work effectively within a multi-racial neighborhood environment
Fluent in Google Applications (Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Drive, Gmail, etc.)
Prior experience with management of social media preferred but not necessary
Physical Demands:
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds
Ability to climb steps
Ability to perform site visits
Ability to walk the neighborhood for an extended period of time and in various seasons
