Job Title: Certified Veterinary Technician
Job Summary:
The certified veterinary technician is a crucial member of the veterinary healthcare team, providing compassionate care to animals and assisting veterinarians in diagnosing and treating various medical conditions. The veterinary technician will perform a wide range of tasks including patient care, laboratory procedures, surgical assistance, client education, administrative duties, and other duties as assigned. The certified veterinary technician must possess a high level of technical expertise, strong communication skills, and a genuine love for animals. Responsibilities:
Patient Care: Assist in the examination, treatment, and monitoring of animals under the supervision of a veterinarian. Administer medications, vaccines, and treatments as prescribed. Monitor vital signs, collect samples for laboratory analysis, and perform diagnostic tests.
Laboratory Procedures: Prepare and analyze laboratory samples such as blood, urine, and feces. Operate and maintain laboratory equipment. Perform diagnostic tests, interpret results, and record findings accurately in patient records.
Surgical Assistance: Prepare surgical suites, instruments, and patients for surgery. Assist veterinarians during surgical procedures by providing appropriate equipment and medications, monitoring anesthesia, and providing post-operative care.
Client Education: Educate pet owners on topics such as animal care, nutrition, medication administration, and disease prevention. Provide clear and accurate instructions on how to care for animals at home.
Administrative Duties: Maintain accurate and complete medical records, including patient history, treatments, and medications. Schedule appointments, answer phone calls, and perform general administrative tasks as needed.
Team Collaboration: Work collaboratively with other veterinary team members, including veterinarians, veterinary assistants, and receptionists, to ensure smooth operation of the clinic and provide the best possible care for patients.
Continuing Education: Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in veterinary medicine through ongoing professional development and continuing education to maintain certification and improve knowledge and skills.
Other Duties as Assigned: Perform additional tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the supervising veterinarian or clinic management to support the efficient operation of the veterinary clinic.
Qualifications:
- Must hold a valid certification as a veterinary technician (CVT)) and be in good standing with the State of Oregon and national veterinary technician association (NAVTA).
- High school diploma or equivalent, with completion of an accredited veterinary technician program.
- Strong knowledge of animal anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and disease processes.
- Proficiency in performing veterinary technical skills such as venipuncture, radiography, intubation, anesthesia monitoring, and laboratory procedures.
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate with clients and team members in a professional and compassionate manner.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, multitask, and prioritize tasks effectively.
- Attention to detail and accuracy in medication-handling, record-keeping, and documentation.
- Physical stamina to lift and restrain animals up to 50 lbs unassisted, as well as stand, bend, and kneel for extended periods of time.
- Compassion, empathy, and genuine love for animals.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
