Description of Work
THIS IS AN ANTICIPATED VANCANCY:
This position is located at Pamlico Correctional Institution, a medium security prison housing approximately 550 adult male offenders. Work in this class involves but is not limited to the following:
- First-line supervision to Correctional Officers.
- Assign lower-level custody staff to an area or post. Evaluate and oversee officer activities and performance and ensure that the custody, security, and welfare of offenders is maintained.
- Coordinate work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implement operational procedures and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy.
- Ensure that staff are fully trained, and that proper conduct, actions, and procedures are being followed.
- Maintain facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance, health, and safety of offenders.
- Communicate effective instruction/direction during drills, searches, and in emergencies situations.
- Respond to emergency situations such as distress codes, escapes, and transportation of offenders.
- Conduct and/or supervise searches of offenders, offender living areas and work areas for contraband.
- Investigate and act when appropriate regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints.
- Prepare, review reports and complete performance evaluations on subordinate staff.
This is a full-time position with State Benefits. The selected candidate may be selected to work any shift and will work weekends and holidays to ensure 24/7 staff coverage.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years six months of experience as a Correctional Officer, or two years of experience as Correctional Officer II; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
