Description Of Work

Applicants will be considered for two vacant positions, 60081542 and 60081604.

The Department of Revenue established these positions as full-time remote.

The North Carolina Department of Revenue is accepting applications for a Revenue Tax Technician to work in the Correspondence Unit in the Taxpayer Assistance and Collection Division. The primary purpose of the Revenue Tax Technician (RTT) is to increase compliance by ensuring all written correspondence for basic to moderate tax situations received by the Department is reviewed, addressed, and resolved in a timely, accurate manner. The Revenue Tax Technician works in the Document Management System (DMS) in various work flow queues to answer basic to moderate questions from taxpayers and representatives, respond to written correspondence, make adjustments to accounts, and resolve taxpayer issues. This position routinely communicates with taxpayers, attorneys, tax consultants, corporate managers, CPAs, and other agency personnel on more complex tax situations. This is a great opportunity for someone with excellent time management skills, a strong work ethic, and can prioritize and multitask. The Revenue Tax Technician maintains rational behavior during interactions with taxpayers and demonstrates courteous, professional, and efficient behavior while dealing with controversial matters.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Initiate telephone contacts and/or correspondence with customers to provide information for resolution of tax matters, including issues relating to filing reports, making payments, notices received, account balances and adjustments, and tax law
  • Respond to correspondence received which taxpayers are requesting a penalty waiver, closing a business, have a misapplied payment, etc.
  • Make outbound calls to taxpayers to assist in resolution of outstanding tax liabilities
  • Explain, educate, and advise taxpayers (individual and businesses) of collection policies/procedures, tax laws, and regulations regarding delinquent taxes
  • Make basic to moderate line item adjustments and updates to accounts to resolve issues based on information received from the taxpayer
  • Establish payment plans with taxpayers based on standard operating procedures
  • Remain abreast of all current revenue laws and any changes thereof
  • Assist with division initiatives/projects as determined by management

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities / Competencies

  • Basic skill level using Microsoft Word, Excel, and MS Office in general.
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in accounting or business-related concepts.
  • Demonstrated experience communicating with taxpayers.
  • Knowledge of the Department's Integrated Tax Administration System (ITAS).
  • Knowledge of the Department's Document Management System (DMS).

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

Associate degree in Business Administration, Accounting or related field from an appropriately accredited institution, and one year work experience preferably in an accounting-related environment or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
