This is a NC State University Extension Associate position.
Job Location: Mills, River North Carolina
NC Farmlink is a statewide Extension program led by two co-directors located in western and eastern North Carolina (https://ncfarmlink.ces.ncsu.edu/). The Extension Associate position serves as the NC Farmlink co-director for western NC and works with regional partner organizations (e.g., Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy, Organic Growers School, and Conserving Carolina) to foster relationships with farmers and landowners to create land access opportunities. The primary function of this position is to provide networking capacity and expertise in farmland information to help bridge the gap between owners of farm and forest land, and beginning and experienced farmers seeking access to land. This will require multiple communication efforts between this position, the co-director position in eastern NC, and linked organizations to become acquainted with farmers to match them with available farmland.
Other essential duties include but are not limited to:
Work closely with agricultural extension agents, state agronomists, Farm Service Agency personnel, Farm Bureau, economic development agencies, relevant local government agencies, and others working with the agricultural industry to be aware of farmers and landowners, and issues that might affect the acquisition of farmland. The incumbent must stay engaged and active with national organizations who have the same mission in order to stay up to speed on the latest program information and available methods.
· Recruit landowners and seekers for the NC Farmlink database, keeping the database and websites up to date.
· Update the application process and qualification standards for the program as needed.
· Develop a strong partner program, including land trusts and other relevant state agencies and non-profits to help support the program as needed.
· Work with partners to write grant proposals to support and expand the NC Farmlink program.
· Serve as the main contact in the region to receive and distribute land access inquiries.
· Coordinate outreach events, materials, and online activities to promote and provide education about the program, for community leaders, farmers, and landowners.
· Create and maintain templates, sample contracts, and other useful program materials to help farmland seekers and farmland owners work through lease and buy processes.
· Work with other regional NC Farmlink Associates to run a cohesive statewide program.
This position is located in Mills River, NC at the Mountain Horticultural Crops Research and Extension Center.
Minimum Education and Experience:
· Master’s Degree in relevant discipline.
· At least two years of experience coordinating workshops, community meetings, and other such events.
· At least 2-5 years of experience with farmland conservation and agricultural support organizations.
Other Required Qualifications:
· Excellent organizational, interpersonal, computer, and writing skills.
· Capability to work independently and be self-motivated.
· Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel (or similar software).
· Strong facilitation skills.
· Proven ability to be creative, self-reliant, and have the ability to take initiative.
· Proven ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and effectively in project teams.
· Have a positive attitude and energy; team spirit.
· Ability to work well with all types of agricultural producers and staff of agricultural support organizations.
Preferred Qualifications:
· Ph.D. in relevant discipline.
· Experience working with a farm link program.
· Familiarity with local and regional food systems and an existing network of relationships within the agricultural community.
· Grant writing experience.
This is a 0.75 FTE (three-quarter time) position with benefits.
