What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medical Laboratory Technician position at North Star Laboratories, LLC?
North Star Laboratories is clinical diagnostics laboratory specializing in molecular diagnostics. We are looking for an eager medical lab technician to join our company.
Day to day laboratory responsibilities include:
- Performs benchtop work and molecular techniques in molecular such as real-time PCR and microarray analysis.
- Performs DNA extraction from various sample types.
- Performs validation protocols and quality control used in molecular testing.
- Monitors and organizes laboratory supplies/reagents/consumables.
- Maintains equipment and records.
- Performs standard operating procedures for the molecular tests in a CLIA certified laboratory.
- Assists laboratory supervisor with regulatory clerical duties.
In accordance with the COLA Laboratory Accreditation Manual, all employees must only perform tests that are authorized by the laboratory director and that are within the individual’s skill level as determined by education, training or experience, and technical abilities. Testing personnel must:
1. Follow the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient results
2. Maintain records which demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens
3. Adhere to laboratory policies for:
o Instrument Maintenance
o Instrument and procedural calibration
o Quality control (QC) performance
o Documentation of maintenance, calibration and QC activities
4. Follow the laboratory’s policies whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable level of performance
5. Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either correct the problem or notify the appropriate supervisor
6. Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications
Education and Experience Requirements:
- BA or BS in human genetics, molecular biology, computational biology or equivalent with laboratory experience in the area of molecular biology.
- 1 year of experience in a molecular laboratory.
- Knowledge of methods in molecular dx such as PCR, microarrays and sequencing.
