THIS POSITION IS SHORT TERM, MAX 1000 HOURS IN A CALENDAR YEAR

North Wind Services, is actively seeking individuals who can contribute to national security within the science, technology, and engineering fields as part of our supplemental labor team at vital federal research and development installations supporting the Department of Energy. NWS has an established history of contributing to the success of their customer’s mission. Available employment opportunities may range from administrative and logistical support to advanced technical positions.

Qualified applicants must be a US citizen, at least 18 years of age, and able to meet pre-employment requirements including any required physicals, drug screen, and/or background investigation to satisfy clearance requirements from the Department of Energy. Successful candidates will be employees of NWS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly -motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance the missions of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, CA. Though employed by NWS, the employee will take day-to-day direction from technical personnel employed directly by the research laboratories. Pay, benefits, Human Resource, and Employment Management functions are provided by NWS.

The Operation and Business Department has an opening in the Environmental Safety & Health Division for a Health Physicist. The successful candidate will have significant operational field experience to provide advanced health physics (HP) support to the Radiation Protection Functional Area (RPFA). The successful candidate will ensure radiation safety programs at LLNL are effective and compliant and will also provide solutions to complex HP issues/problems and provide support and guidance to other ES&H Team members (e.g., health physicists, technicians).

Essential Duties

- Evaluate and provide HP input on radiation safety policies & procedures. Draft, review, and maintain related institutional documents and other contents

- Act as the point of contact (POC) and alternate POC, as assigned, for radiation protection program functional elements (e.g., contamination control, posting and labeling, radiation generating device, etc.).

- Develop and maintain associated program documents and processes

- Conduct assessments and audits necessary to comply with applicable regulatory requirements

- Evaluate and summarize and reported radiological issues, looking for trends and to identify lessons learned

- Provide guidance and clarification to, and answer radiation safety program implementation questions from the ES&H radiological control personnel on matters related to HP field operations

- Solve complex technical problems with frequent independent decision-making, interacting with customers and stakeholders at all levels to provide resolution or continuous improvement of operations

- Provide feedback to management regarding the effectiveness of the radiation safety program in areas of responsibility

- Interact with professional colleagues, internal senior management, and sponsor organizations across and outside the Laboratory on advanced technical areas related to health physics

- Provide subject matter expert advice and advanced HP solutions to highly complex problems and represent the organization as a primary technical resource in specific areas of assignment

- Mentor less experienced personnel

- Provide operational field HP support on an as needed basis

- Perform other duties as assigned

Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

- Bachelor’s degree in health physics, Radiation Protection, or a related field or the equivalent combination of education and significant related experience, and significant professional level operational health physics experience

- Substantial professional experience in HP or a related field with highly advanced knowledge of related state and federal regulations and other consensus organizations

- Advanced experience conducting audits/assessments of a radiation protection program.

- Analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills to evaluate, interpret, negotiate, recommend, and implement actions/solutions for complex problems

- Effective organizational skills with attention to detail necessary to handle multiple complex tasks in a demanding environment with conflicting priorities, tight and changing deadlines, and frequent interruptions while providing high-level customer service and good follow through

- Expert level experience leading independent HP work and training, conducting gap analysis, reviewing new health and safety standards, and providing technical direction/leadership to health and safety staff on HP related matters.

- Expert-level verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and to present and communicate technical information to all levels of management both internal and external to the Laboratory, including regulatory agencies and key stakeholders.

- Demonstrated ability to negotiate, recommend and implement solutions to highly complex problems

Desired Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

- Master’s or higher degree in Health Physics, or another closely related technical area

- Certification by the American Board of Health Physics

Special Requirements

Pre-Placement Medical Exam: A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Pre-employment drug test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post offer, pre-employment drug test.

Anticipated Clearance Level: Q (position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
