GENERAL PURPOSE
The Parks Summer Staff seasonal position is responsible for the general maintenance and cleaning, as well as regular safety inspections, of grounds and equipment associated with County owned lands and facilities.
The regular shift for this position will include weekdays, weekends, and holidays. The Division will be flexible with scheduling shifts with times varying from 5am to 8pm, depending on bi-weekly scheduling of job assignments. The County Parks & Recreation Department has reservations, events, and other duties that require this position to be available seven (7) days a week.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
This position reports to, and receives direction from, the Parks Recreation Specialist, Parks Foreman, Lead Groundskeeper, and Superintendent of Parks & Recreation.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
This position is not responsible for the supervision of other employees or functions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES OF THE POSITION
Provides quality service for guests at all County sponsored or supported programs and events. Parks Summer Staff employees are expected to be diplomatic and patient.
Enforces all facility and safety rules and regulations. Completes safety inspection forms as assigned. Promptly completes and maintains damage and/or nuisance reports. Identifies and calls for assistance when emergencies arise.
Performs general maintenance duties such as cleaning grounds, paths, equipment, lawns, restrooms, and open areas. This includes trash removal/pick-up and/or moving picnic tables and equipment.
Checks reservation permits and confirms reservation details (day/rental). Welcomes, cleans up, and inspects reservation area prior to and after event.
Responsible for blocking off full parking areas, unsafe areas, etc.
Operates light vehicles, large mowers, small grass cutting/hedge trimming machinery, power tools, and other specialized seasonal maintenance equipment as assigned. Uses hand and power equipment to trim grass around trees, fences, and structures. Prunes trees and shrubs.
Rakes leaves, picks up litter, and keeps areas tidy and in good appearance. Clears ditches and removes brush from trails and pathways.
Waters, cultivates and trims lawns, shrubs, flowers, trees and other plantings. Plants trees, shrubs, and flowers. May perform hand mulching and hand weeding.
Assists with construction and landscape projects.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE - Ability to read directions and safety requirements on hand and power equipment; AND
Employees assigned to this title are preferred to possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license; AND
Must be at least 17 years of age.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Basic knowledge of methods, techniques, materials and equipment used in grounds maintenance work.
Basic knowledge of methods and techniques used in power equipment operation and maintenance.
Ability to understand, follow, and give verbal and written instructions.
Ability to identify events and situations that require an immediate emergency response.
Ability to work out-of-doors in differing climatic conditions for several hours at a time.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English to perform the duties of this position.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT
Lawn and landscaping equipment, including tractors, mowers, airifier, chain saw, edgers, weed trimmers, drive small utility vehicle (i.e. E-Z Go, Gator), and miscellaneous hand and power tools for turf maintenance.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, walk sit and talk or hear.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to twenty-five (25) pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
The employee will work outdoors in different climatic conditions for several hours at a time. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts or in adverse weather conditions, including flood conditions. The employee may encounter wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee may deal with high volume of vehicular traffic. The County will provide proper safety equipment and safety training.
The noise level in the work environment is moderately noisy.
