Northern California Institute for Research and Education (NCIRE) is the leading nonprofit research institute in the United States devoted to advancing Veterans health research. NCIRE is part of one of the world’s most dedicated and successful Veterans care communities, pioneering new treatments and understandings of military medicine and care.
Along with our partners at the San Francisco VA Medical Center and the University of California, San Francisco, we are working to discover and develop effective, safe, and practical treatments for military injuries and diseases affecting Veterans. Through new technologies, novel scientific insights, and international clinical collaborations, we strive to set a new standard of health care research for Veterans and military personnel.
Position Definition:
The Principal Research Statistician will be working in the research group of Professor Michael Weiner, MD, the Principal Investigator of the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). The applicant will be involved in innovative research using ADNI data. They will be responsible for identifying, tracking, and monitoring all data collected by ADNI, including developing improved methods to identify missing data across various sources, harmonizing complex longitudinal data, and developing user friendly tools for others to use ADNI data for research purposes.
ADNI is a longitudinal multicenter study designed to develop clinical, imaging, genetic, and biochemical biomarkers for the early detection and tracking of Alzheimer’s disease. Since its launch more than a decade ago, the landmark public-private partnership has made major contributions to Alzheimer’s research, enabling the sharing of data between researchers around the world.
This position could be filled by a Statistician/Biostatistician with a Master’s degree, or a data scientist or programmer with sufficient knowledge and experience in data analysis and statistical programming.
This individual will actively contribute to the ADNI mission and will be responsible for monitoring ADNI databases and helping to create code for analysis datasets as well as interactive graphical and tabular study reports and dashboards. This person will collaborate with ADNI team members who generate data across different systems to reconcile gaps, identify existing problems and help strategize data management solutions as the ADNI project moves into its next phase. This person will gain an awareness and understanding of the ADNI data end-user experience and work to make the data as user-friendly as possible. ADNI collects data in many formats, so familiarity with imaging, clinical, and -omics domains is a plus.
Essential Functions:
· Develop a complete understanding of the study design and databases, changes in study protocol, and data collected from all phases of ADNI, going back to ADNI’s origins in 2004.
· Develop a SOP for ADNI database management and data sharing.
· Generate a comprehensive database dictionary for ADNI databases.
· Design and generate study and data monitoring reports. Design and create applications to visualize study data.
· Produce analysis datasets, reports, tables, and figures for research projects, per specifications from ADNI investigators, while maintaining documentation.
· Develop ‘Read Me’ documents that will be shared with all investigators when they request ADNI data and before they start analyses. These documents should include information about the history of the ADNI databases, the details of protocol changes, the details of the harmonizing of databases over time, the details of processing protocols used.
· Develop new approaches to making the ADNI dataset more understandable to outside investigators.
Job Requirements:
· Bachelor’s Degree required with a concentration in Statistics, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Informatics or related fields. Master’s degree in Biostatistics, Statistics, or Data Science preferred, but those with MS/MA degrees involving significant data management and analysis experience, preferably in biology/human health will also be considered.
· Experience with management of large, complex, multidimensional, interconnected databases
· Experience with database querying and monitoring, and basic analyses including summary statistics and data visualization
· Experience working with and creating hierarchical data models and architecture, and using data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, ArcGIS).
· Proficiency in statistical computer languages (e.g., R, Python, etc.) and scripting to manipulate and analyze data from large datasets.
· Knowledge and experience working with current modeling tools (e.g., clustering, quantile regression), machine learning algorithms (e.g., gradient boosted machines, AdaBoost, ExtraTrees, etc.), deep learning techniques (e.g., 3D CNNs), and applied statistical concepts (e.g., distributions, mixed models, random effects)
· Evidence of algorithm development in an open domain (e.g., GitHub).
· Basic programming skills
· Ability to work well with fellow data engineers, statisticians and clinical researchers
· Biostatistics experience in research.
· Good organizational and time management skills
· Good written and verbal communication skills
· Ability to operate in a team environment
· Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision
Other Preferred Qualifications:
· Experience with clinical trials
· Experience with research in Alzheimer’s disease or in the elderly population
· Knowledge of imaging database management and imaging analysis software
· Familiarity with social media, marketing, and enrollment metrics (Facebook, Google Analytics, etc.)
