At this level, Distribution Designer II’s build on their experience and are still learning how to be responsible for the projects assigned to them. They leverage their experience in preparing construction drawings and other documents to design portions of projects, as assigned. Designers are part of project teams working on electric projects such as underground and overhead circuits. Incumbents support multiple projects among remote offices and prioritize work tasks. Solid written and verbal communication skills are essential. Designers are expected to use their education, experience, intelligence and common sense to resolve engineering issues and complete assigned tasks with increasing acuity. At this level, designers also begin to participate in proposal work for the firm.
Responsibilities
- Use computer-aided drafting tools that may include AutoCAD, AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation, AutoCAD Inventor, Bentley Substation, and/or Solidworks/CADWorx, as well as technical handbooks, utility standards, tables, and calculators to create relevant drawings and 3D models of facilities/protection and control diagrams
- Confer with other staff members to resolve problems and create construction documents
- Create designs of underground and overhead circuits for multiple projects, for electric distribution roles
- Prepare increasingly complex deliverables in a professional and organized manner
- Prepare drawings accurately and in conformance with the applicable standards and regulations, and review all work for completeness before submitting for engineering review
- Work under the direction of senior designers and engineers
- Meet client and NV5’s requirements and standards
- Manage and maintain design records and files
- Complete as-built drawings
- Create various permit and HDD drawings
- Begin learning how to calculate costs and time schedules for proposed work
- Able to fulfill assignments that require independent judgment and evaluation
- Able to work independently with minimal or no supervision
- Provide leadership, guidance, and instruction for less-experienced staff
- Regularly meet and correspond with clients or outside personnel
- Specify portions of the engineering system from catalogs or other resources. This typically involves the application of special knowledge to design effective engineering solutions
- Some travel to client sites as needed (expected to be no more than 30% of time)
- Assist in preparation of technical papers for submittal to regional/national publications
- Build an increasingly robust working knowledge of electric/gas utility safe work practices
Qualifications
Education/Qualifications:
- At least 6-8 years of AutoCAD, MicroStation and/or AutoCAD Civil 3D experience
- Associate’s Degree or Trade School Certification in Engineering, Architectural or Design Technologies, Mechanical or Electrical Technology or relevant field, or equivalent training and experience Positive attitude, able to collaboratively work with others
- Proficient using MS Office Suite and other relevant software
- Valid driver’s license
- 2-6 years of experience in utility design Able to demonstrate at least basic knowledge of utility safe work practices
- Willing to work in and around underground environments with a utility-authorized Qualified Worker and be willing to work in high-vehicle-traffic areas as needed
- Knowledgeable of relevant industry standards for design and construction
- Experience preparing bills of materials and construction units with software such as SAP or Maximo
Desirable Qualifications:
- Some knowledge of relevant business and technical applications, such as Adobe Creative Suite,
- Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project, PLS-CADD, and O-Calc
- At least 4 years of experience, including direct design and drafting work in the power-delivery field is strongly preferred
- A background as an electrical designer or planner with SDG&E or comparable large utility
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Architectural or Design Technologies, Mechanical or Electrical Technology or relevant field Participate in technical and professional societies
- Proficient knowledge of design programs
Metrics:
- Performance evaluation metrics include accurate completion of work in a timely manner
- Attends in-house seminars and educational opportunities outside of the offices
Physical Demands:
- This position requires sitting for extensive periods of time
- Must be able to visually interpret complex drawings
- This position may require field work, such as hiking and working with utility linemen. Hikes for pole reviews can be as long as 5 miles
The pay range for this California position is $38.46- $48.07 per hour; however, base pay offered may be higher or lower depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience of the candidate. Restricted stock units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered. Salary : $38 - $48
