Public Information Specialists are engaged in the preparation of written material, editing and dissemination of informational materials concerning the programs and activities of a state agency. This is accomplished through the use of various media including newspapers, radio, television, Internet web content development, and web page layout, video, periodicals, and state publications. Public Information Specialists at all levels will have to interact with the public, the media, and the agency staff to publicize or clarify agency programs and policies. As a Public Information Specialist, you would work under general supervision and be responsible for performing the full range of public information activities required in preparing written and audiovisual materials used in publicizing an agency program
Minimum Qualifications: To be considered for permanent appointment, candidates must be reachable on the current Civil Service eligible list or be eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law. If a viable eligible list does not exist, a provisional appointment may be made in accordance with Civil Service Law. Candidates who accept a provisional appointment must take the next competitive examination and be reachable on the resultant eligible list in order to be considered for permanent appointment to the position. The minimum requirements for taking the examination are: FOR OPEN-COMPETITIVE – You must have: Either 1. a bachelor’s degree in media, new media, English, communications, journalism, broadcasting, public relations, films, TV productions, or digital marketing AND two years of experience in public or governmental relations, and/or in writing or producing content for various media; Or 2. a master’s or higher degree in media, new media, English, communications, journalism, broadcasting, public relations, films, TV productions, or digital marketing AND one year of experience in public or governmental relations, and/or in writing or producing content for various media; Or 3. six years of the experience described above. FOR PROMOTIONAL – You must be a qualified employee of New York State and have had three months of permanent competitive, non-competitive, or 55-b/55-c service as a: Either A. Public Information Specialist, or a Public Information Specialist (Spanish Language); Or B. Multimedia Production Technician, Graphic Designer 1, or Photographer 2
