Overview:

The Laboratory Protection Division (LPD) is seeking a Classification Analyst in support of the Laboratory Protecting Division who will focus on supporting the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Classification Office Program. ORNL Classification Analyst is responsible for providing programmatic and technical support and expertise to the ORNL Classification Program. This position uses fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of a particular field of specialization to perform routine scientific research tasks requiring the application of established techniques, policies, and criteria and resides in the Safeguards and Security Group in the Laboratory Protection Division within the Facilities & Operations Directorate at ORNL. The position will report to the Classification Officer within the Safeguards and Security Group.

As part of our team, you will assist the Classification Officer in supporting the management and oversight of the ORNL Classification Program and the classification of scientific, technical, and other information as well as provide Unclassified Controlled Nuclear Information (UCNI) and Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) guidance for ORNL Programs. ORNL is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. Our diverse capabilities span a broad spectrum of scientific and engineering disciplines, enabling the Laboratory to explore fundamental science challenges and to carry out the research needed to accelerate the delivery of solutions to the marketplace.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Reviewing scientific papers and reports to identify scientific and technical information that requires protection or control in accordance with federal regulations and DOE/National Nuclear Security Administration Classification policies and guidelines.
  • Reviewing authoritative publications to discern classification for understudied topics and provide quantitative and qualitative data analysis and interpretation as part of a research team.
  • Providing analytic and narrative input into scientific abstracts, manuscripts, and/or presentations to resolve classification/UCNI issues affecting ORNL mission objectives.
  • Utilization of established methods, techniques, and procedures in the performance of standard scientific research.
  • Frequent interaction with senior engineers, scientists, and technical management on design, organization, oversight, and quality control of specific scientific research projects within a broader research study.
  • Maintaining a thorough knowledge and understanding of relevant state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and systems. The ever-changing Federal classification policies, laws, and statutes provide guidance for ongoing ORNL missions.
  • Analyzing complex information and providing interpretations to identify the classification or controls that will be required on programmatic work products or processes in order to adhere to current classification guidance from DOE and other federal agencies.
  • Ensuring ORNL staff maintains a healthy awareness of classified subject areas, their responsibilities for protecting classified information, and the resources available to them for ensuring classified information is identified and protected.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Position requires a Bachelor's degree.
  • A minimum of five years of relevant experience in derivative classification, UCNI, declassification, or working in classified subject areas; with increasing responsibilities for managing, implementing, planning, evaluating, and assessing this type of work.
  • Knowledge of scientific approach and methodologies of current technological developments/trends in area of expertise.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Several years of experience in the classification field at a DOE facility.
  • Working knowledge of and experience with DOE O 475.2B, Identifying Classified Information, DOE O 471.1B, Identification and Protection of Unclassified Controlled Nuclear Information, and DOE O 471.6, Information Security.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail with the ability to quickly change from one task to a drastically different task.
  • Strong analytical skills; customer service experience; and the ability to interpret, communicate, and implement complex instructions.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

Special Requirements:

  • Q clearance:This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
