Communications Specialist - Internal Communications

Overview:

The Communications Division at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory seeks a Communications Specialist with project coordination experience to support internal communications. This role will interface with staff at all levels from both research and operations areas of the Laboratory for the purpose of helping share ORNL messages, news, and information with staff. The successful candidate will be a talented deadline-driven writer who will be expected to create and execute a variety of compelling internal-facing communications plans and products. They will work closely with and help support the editors of the employee internal news site, ORNL Today, and will regularly engage with Creative Services and Information Technology Services staff in order to fulfill communications needs.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

• Develop and execute original communications plans and products to inform prime audiences (leadership team, managers, staff, targeted groups across ORNL).
• Research, write, and produce articles, newsletters, digital stories, presentations, videos, educational outreach materials, web content, advertisements, and other content to highlight ORNL messaging, news, and information.
• Assist in the production of visual content, working in coordination with video producers, graphic artists, digital media staff, information technology services, and others to support multiplatform delivery of information.
• Build relationships with internal customers and collaborators by investing time and effort to understand their business and communications needs and providing excellent customer service and timely solutions.
• Serve as backup editor of ORNL Today when needed by mastering the Froala platform
• Continually seek opportunities to bring new internal communications solutions to ORNL.

Qualifications Required:

• Bachelor’s degree plus five years of professional experience in internal communications. Equivalent education and experience will be considered. Candidates will be expected to share a portfolio of their work.

Qualifications Preferred:

• Master’s degree and ten or more years of internal communications experience.
• Substantial experience planning and executing internal communications plans and products in a research-oriented setting or other highly technical field.
• Proven project coordination experience.
• Excellent written and interpersonal skills; familiarity with a variety of publishing, production, and design software; and proficiency in the use of content management systems.
• Self-motivation, creativity, attention to detail, and skills required for planning, coordinating, and producing effective communication products.
• Ability to balance multiple demands and perform professionally under pressure.
• Experience with DOE, national laboratories, or research universities is a plus.

Work Directions and Interfaces:

This position will report through the ORNL Communications Division and be part of the Laboratory Communications team. This is an on-site position located in Oak Ridge, TN.
