Overview:
The National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) in the Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a highly qualified individual to play a key role in improving security, performance, and reliability of the NCCS computing infrastructure which supports multiple highly ranked Top500 Supercomputers, including the world's first exaflop system, Frontier.
We are searching for a self-starter with the ability to work within the parameters of a project to achieve the vital goals. You will have the opportunity to work in the HPC Networking group within the Systems section to support all activities of the supercomputer center.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Installing, configuring, and maintaining network system software
Working with the team to define and implement best practices and standards within the organization
Diagnosing network operational problems quickly and efficiently
Work with users to transfer data to and from remote sites
Maintaining and improving network performance and health metric collection and monitoring
Analyze the performance and health metrics to proactively avoid future problems, fix current problems, and aid in capacity planning
Ensuring that appropriate security measures are built into the network, that these security measures meet the performance needs of the center, and that they are maintained in future modifications
Coordinate with cyber security staff to provide appropriate data for intrusion detection
Participate in on-call rotation, responding to critical incidents 24 hours, 7-day support and off hour maintenance windows
Documenting network administration procedures for routine and sophisticated tasks
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in computer science or closely related field and 5 years of experience in network engineering and administration. An equivalent combination of education and networking experience will be considered.
Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced knowledge of networking fundamentals, operating system fundamentals, and their interaction with each other.
Advanced knowledge of the development, implementation, and review of technical network and security requirements.
An in-depth knowledge of standards governing both TCP/IP and Ethernet.
Working knowledge of packet capture and analysis tools
In-depth knowledge of the systems of the network, their function, and the risks that they present.
Familiarity and experience with basic scripting-including Perl, Expect, Python.
Experience with and knowledge of SNMP, Netflow, sFlow, syslog.
Ability to plan, coordinate, prioritize tasks, and complete assigned projects with minimal direction.
Experience designing, configuring and troubleshooting enterprise-class network switches, routers, and firewalls.
Experience implementing network-level security technologies and following security best-practices.
Good interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to work as a standout colleague.
Prior experience with test utilities and other methods for simulating workloads in a test environment.
A proven foundation in high-performance computing, experience with large supercomputers, and knowledge of applications that run on them.
Special Requirement:
This position requires the ability to acquire and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
