Overview:

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory has an opening for a Technical Professional staff member for the NNFD Facility Management Section as a Waste Operations Group Leader. In this role you will provide oversight, direction, and technical expertise in the responsible generation, management, minimization, and disposal of radioactive waste from the ISED facilities. This position reports to the Nuclear Facilities Management Section Head.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the safe, compliant, and efficient disposal of waste from the ISED nuclear and radiological facilities
  • Establish a vision and path forward for waste management in ISED that can be effectively communicated to management with short- and long-term planning goals
  • Review/baseline legacy and newly generated waste streams in ISED nuclear and radiological facilities to establish consistent processes for disposal
  • Review/baseline current projects/production to identify where waste can be minimized and/or eliminated
  • Establish metrics and targets for legacy and newly generated waste disposal
  • Ensure newly generated waste streams are recognized before being generated and waste acceptance criteria are revised that support disposal
  • In coordination with the waste coordinators, maintain a waste inventory in each facility
  • Develop plans which support the minimization of waste through 1) involvement when new work is proposed so that waste streams can be identified early and managed/minimized, and 2) coordination with Melton Valley and Bethel Valley waste coordinators to develop best practices and lessons learned from each valley to enhance efficient and compliant waste management activities
  • Review waste package documentation as needed to ensure acceptance by TWMD/CCP to minimize/eliminate potential for future re-packaging/re-handling
  • Establish recycling/reuse options where possible
  • Where waste streams cannot be eliminated, develop processes where streams can be efficiently and effectively dispositioned
  • Develops models to appropriately charge back waste costs to generator programs
  • Establish processes to fully document waste streams entering waste containers thereby eliminating future waste acceptance issues
  • Incorporate Central Characterization Project (CCP) requirements into TRU waste disposal activities where required
  • Plan for future transition of EM contact-handled and remote-handled transuranic waste facilities to ORNL by becoming the ORNL point-of-contact for SAR/TSR development and implementation


Basic Qualifications:

  • Requires a B.S. with 8 years relevant experience, or significant relevant experience. Degree must be in an engineering field or related science.
  • Qualified candidates must have a minimum of 4 years of nuclear experience.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. with a minimum of 4 years relevant experience or a M.S. with a minimum of 7 years experience
  • Familiarity with ORNL facilities and ORNL or commercially available radioactive material transportation shipping containers is desired as well as requisite Department of Transportation regulation knowledge. This position also requires experience with Microsoft Office software, particularly Project, PowerPoint and Excel applications.
