What are the responsibilities and job description for the Retort Operator position at OBI Seafoods, LLC?
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Ensure rigorous adherence to the established scheduled processes.
- Concise monitoring and documentation of each cook.
- Maintenance of the various recording devices essential to time/temp monitoring.
- Swift response and QA notification of deviations in the cook’s temperature.
- Supervision of retort unloads to maintain an unadulterated post-cook cool down.
- Pre and post season maintenance as required to ensure smooth start-ups.
- Provide aid as needed to the engineering department to maintaining maximum boiler efficiency.
- Thorough knowledge of, and the ability to explain, the retort systems to visiting food inspectors.
- Assistance with other plant and company projects as needed.
- Prompt, reliable, and predictable attendance is an essential function of the job.
- Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- The ability to maintain detailed, accurate, and legible records.
- Good communication skills with a strong mathematical aptitude.
- A critical eye and ability to detect changes in one’s surroundings.
- Able to work unfalteringly with minimum supervision.
- An understanding of thermal processing concepts and the importance of critical control points.
- General knowledge of mechanical principles.
- Must be able to live and work in a remote Alaskan village throughout the winter.
- Able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Must always be professional and represent OBI Seafoods with the highest standards.
COMPENSATION:
- Pay rate depends on experience. This is an hourly position that is eligible for overtime pay. In Alaska, overtime is one and one-half times the regular hourly rate and is paid for hours worked over 8 hours in a day and after 40 hours are worked in a week.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Working Conditions and Physical Effort:
- Work involves daily exposure to unusual elements such as dirt, dust, fumes, extreme temperatures, humidity, darkness, and/or noise.
- Work environment involves daily exposure to physical risks, such as working around mechanical, chemical, and electrical hazards.
- Position requires the ability to stand, sit at a desk, walking around office and plant, lifting, and carrying packages up to 50 pounds, utilizing fine dexterity. Requires reaching, kneeling, crawling, and twisting to inspect equipment. Also requires the ability to see, Hear, and communicate with associates as well as others by utilizing professional etiquette.
- Personal protective equipment, as defined by OBI Seafoods, will be provided.
- Position will be exposed to different levels of stress and responsibilities.
